Holy God, I'd forgotten how much fun that game was, and I haven't even ripped off any banks and gotten a high-quality rig yet. :)

... Uplink?

It's a hacking game made by the same guys who did DEFCON and Darwinia. You're part of a group of freelance hackers called Uplink. You start off low-level, stealing and deleting individual data files from corporations, then work your way into clearing arrest records, forging credentials, tracing illegal bank transfers (and then often making one more transfer into your own bank account), that sort of thing. Meanwhile, in the story, there's an organization writing a virus to destroy the internet, which is later countered by another one writing an antivirus. You get thrown into the middle of the cyberwar, picking a side and either destroying the web or saving it. Or staying neutral and just going about with your stealing, which probably gets it destroyed anyways.

That said, when I'm about to completely, totally, and irrevocably destroy a company's mainframe, I need to remember to check if there are any files from them I need to steal.

Sold. That was a game so simple in design yet fantasticly brutal in execution. Backstabing your allies and getting off a good first strike was the best.

Reminds me of Cyberpunk 2020. And anything that reminds me of Cyberpunk 2020 is no bad thing.

I love Diplo. There's nothing in the world more satisfying than backstabbing three people at once without any of them realizing you're the bad guy.

My shining hour remains the case of the Swiss South America.

Diplomacy mode, the world quickly breaks up into two main alliances. Asia and Russia vs Europe, America and South America with Africa sitting on the fence. Africa jumps onto the Pan-American Alliance pretty early, and Asia and Russia punish him bad when the nukes start flying.

All the while I've not fired anything from a single silo.

So, we cut Africa loose after Asia and Russia have done him over good, and I send the bombers to nuke what's left while my subs creep around past Capetown.

All the while I've not fired anything from a single silo.

Africa's a glowing wasteland, and Russia and Asia turn on Europe. The Americans lost the naval war off the West Coast pretty badly, owing to me using the excuse of "I deployed my navy bad because I was rushed". The Russo-Chinese fleet plasters America with sublanched nukes while my subs creep past Madagascar.

All the while I've not fired anything from a single silo.

Soon enough America joins Africa back in the Stone Age, and my fleet starts to get overwhelmed by the combined Russo-Chinese fleet as well. The nuclear launch detectors across Eurasia go nuts, so I fire up my own silo's and start the missiles flying.

Best thing is, they're all directed at either Europe, or the American East Coast. Figuring I may as well not do it by half-measures, my subs just off India pop up and start blasting away at India and lobbing a few more at Russia and China proper. For good measure, I turn on America and blast whatever's been left before waiting for the counter-strike.

It doesn't come. Europe gets trashed, America is a big hole and Africa is gone. Game ends, my score was something like 96.

Nice. I'll usually form up some alliances in the early game—convince the people right next to me that we need each other, so I won't betray him and he won't betray me. I'll actually do this with everyone, make them think I'm their friend, but I'll be arranging for everybody to hit whoever's farthest away from me as soon as the ticker hits DEFCON 1. At the same time, though, I'll convince the people I want to hang around with that I'm pretending to be friends with the next two people I want to hit as an excuse to not help out with the first one—the most I ever do is a few bombers or SRBMs. Since I'm way far away and have nice, trusting, gullible sponges between me and whoever's getting shafted, I don't take any hits. Once the first guy's gone, I move on to the next farthest, while again convincing him that I'm really allied with him and only pretending to be allied with my actual allies so I can hit them when they're weakest and simultaneously convince my actual allies that I'm pretending to be his ally pretending to be their allies and that I can't nuke him because then he'd realize it. Wash, rinse, and repeat with the next guy. At that point, the chumps have no nukes, whereas because I've been sitting on the sidelines the whole time pulling the strings I've only launched fifteen or twenty, meaning I can easily overwhelm them with full silos and the subs I've secretly stationed just off of their coastline.

My proudest moment, for the record, wasn't even a moment of victory. During a game playing as Africa, the first person the alliance was broken with was North America. I had done such a good job of manipulating him that when my subs in the Arctic opened up, he thought I was actually helping him.

I ended up winning that game, by the way. The alliance smashed North America, then turned on Russia and Asia. About halfway through the fighting in Asia, Europe and South America turned on me, but they'd both used a lot of their nukes already while my defenses were untouched. A massive wave of European missiles got shot down, followed by three African retaliations wiping them out while a few bombers and subs ganked the bits of South America the US hadn't already sufficiently glassed.

I love how as soon as Defcon 1 has ticked on, a single impact seems like a mighty blow, and yet by the end of it, you're counting the millions as a number after the decimal point. That, and seeing how the population density changes before and after Defcon 1.

Always ends up a huge glowing sphere. My favourite thing is always looking to see what cities won the nuclear war. Milwaukee tends to get away with it in my games for some reason.

Probably because nobody realizes it exists. And then after the war ends, it becomes the capital of the Global Wisconsinite Empire. *nods*

MARK FOUR STYLE MOTHERFUCKAH!

Just played the Blood Dragon demo. I am going to scrounge for money non-stop, because I HAVE to get the full game. It's just, unbelievably awesome. Not to mention I don't get why IGN was bitching about the cutscenes. You can skip them if you want, but they're hilarious.

I should go and play that later. Depends if I get distracted by Minecraft or not. Been playing that a lot lately. I like how it is a standalone game, too, but we already got Far Cry 3 and finished it so it isn't a standalone for us.

Just FYI, hold down the left bumper to scroll through weapons. I didn't notice the hint, so I spent the entire demo thinking I only had a pistol, while I actually had a shotgun, sniper rifle, assault rifle, mine, and C4. The shotgun is hilarious though, especially the reloading animation where you simply throw ammo into the slot.

That's the Xbox, right? Might be different for me. It probably is similar to Far Cry 3 anyway.

Well, apparently today my dad found Heavy Rain, The Last Story (Don't know anything about it, but my sister wants it), and Dragon's Dogma, all 3 games we've been having a hard time finding, or in Dragon's Dogma's case, been too expensive for us to want to buy it. While I'm not a fan of Gamestop, I will give them credit for their apparent better selection then Best Buy. The Best Buy we went to most recently seemed really scattered and had a rather surprising lacking of games.

I think I need to get back into gaming.

The only thing I get at Gamestop these days are Steam cards. I haven't had to buy new games for my Wii in forever, and their selection of PC games is utter garbage.

I just don't like the whole $30 for a new game, or $28 for a used game and suddenly none of the money goes to the game company. I like to support the game companies. Which I can, obviously, but I still don't like their business practice of selling used games slightly cheaper then the original price.

PC games I just get on Steam :)

I just don't like the whole $30 for a new game, or $28 for a used game and suddenly none of the money goes to the game company. I like to support the game companies. Which I can, obviously, but I still don't like their business practice of selling used games slightly cheaper then the original price.

PC games I just get on Steam :)

Jesus, where do you live that you can get games new for thirty bucks? I never see them going for less than forty these days, and it's way more common to see fifty or sixty.

Not brand new. The games we usually get have been out a while. But I live in Washington state.

Heavy Rain is $40, Dragon's Dogma is $40, and The Last Story is $30. All have been out for a while now, and Dragon's Dogma just got out of being $60 with their re-release of sorts that fixes bugs, adds a new mission, and makes the game cheaper.

Still ridiculous. Remember when you could get a good game, new, for $20?
