I never had a particular favourite. I was always focussed on having the stongest possible group that could cover all bases.
if thats how you played then it is very good to pick a team you were familiar with. in some cases though it is also important to try different pokemon teams to come up with the best one that suits you. in my case it would be a cyndaquil, catch a pidgey, rattata, onix, hatch the togepi egg, then catch the legendary depending whether im playing heart gold or soul silver. in that scenario i would say lugia or ho-oh not just because they are legendary but because of their stats.
