Those are both excellent films, so you've got good taste. That's better than being learned in the way of cinema, if you ask me.

I didn't mean to come across as pretentious, it's just with things I know more about I can illustrate what I really like and, even if I don't like it, notice the more admirable aspects.

That said yeah, The Thing was really great - I'm not a fan of 'horror movies' per say but it certainly managed to shock me, the effects used for the transformations were fantastic and it was wonderfully tense.

Full Metal Jacket was just awesome, I already feel the need to watch it again.
we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.

This is the problem I have. I could take a bunch of people's lists and toss on a few more names as well.

As a practical measure, of the movies I own, Kurosawa directed the largest share (I have almost everything he did). Then there's some guy named Leone, who turned Kurosawa's Yojimbo into a western and then spun it into a trilogy. I also have another trilogy by some guy with the generic name of "Peter Jackson". God, how unoriginal. :p Then, a couple by some guy with creative parents:"Ridley" is a good name... and at least Chris Nolan chose his daddy well (two of his). I think all the rest in my collection are singletons.

Don't worry, you didn't. I actually thought you were being quite the opposite.

Full Metal Jacket was just awesome, I already feel the need to watch it again.

Do it, you won't be sorry. I've seen it 4 times now, and it's still stayed good so far.

I don't focus on directors too much when I watch movies, with a few exceptions. I do dearly love Spielberg, but that's too damn easy.
I really like Wes Anderson, though:
1. The Life Aquatic
2. The Darjeeling Limited
3. Either Rushmore or the Royal Tenenbaums, depending

Steven Spielberg- Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park.

Quentin Tarantino- Inglorious Basterds

Dont really have three of each, these are just some of my favorite movies

Basicly this But take out Jurassic park and replace inglorious badterds with pulp fiction.

It's a tie between Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter and Martin Scorsese.

Wes Anderson. He's honestly an amazing director.
