Who is your favorite Movie Director?

Postby Aardenland » Mon Jan 28, 2013 5:51 pm

Name your favorite movie director and your three favorite films of theirs. Me? I can't decide, so I have THREE.

AKIRA KUROSAWA

1. Ikiru
2. Rashomon
3. Seven Samurai

STANLEY KUBRICK

1. The Shining
2. Paths of Glory
3. 2001, A Space Odyssey

HAYAO MIYAZAKI

1. Princess Mononoke
2. Spirited Away
3. Castle in the Sky

Yes, those are in order, though some of their work I haven't seen yet or don't remember well enough. I'd also put Spartacus on Kubrick's list, but it wasn't really his style, though I like it a lot.

I don't think I have a favourite director, but I do really like Martin Scorcese, Oliver Stone, Hideo Nakata, Wes Craven and several others that I just can't think of.

I love Tarantino's movies and he is an expert at writing dialogue, but I just can't say that he's one of my favourite directors because he uses so much material from other films.

There are a few directors that I'll tend to watch what they make.

With a few exceptions, Spike Lee, but there have been a few that never really appealed enough for me to go see.

Kevin Smith, but I never got a chance to see Red State.

Terry Gilliam, with him I don't even check, I'll just go see it. Occasionally that can be awkward.

Ridley Scott, though with some skepticism. Maybe not, I don't know that I have ever skipped a movie he made...the sad thing is that there are a few directors I'm 'meh' about that I end up seeing more 'religiously' than ones I genuily like.

For instance, I don't think I've enjoyed or even kind of liked a Tim Burton movie since...Ed Wood? No, Big Fish, I really like that. But I watch everything that guy puts out for some reason, like I'm waiting for him to be good.

Werner Herzog, I like that guy. I almost like him enough to watch Jack Reacher. Almost.

Who else...I don't know. There are others.

I nearly included him as Blade Runner is my favourite film, but then I remembered how much I hated Robin Hood. The rest of films are okay, good production values and whatever but they don't really grab me.

I found that very few of my favourite films were made by my favourite directors which seemed slightly odd.

Oh geez, Robin Hood...that didn't even manage to be bad as much as it managed to be completely forgettable. I not only forgot that was a Ridley Scott film, I forgot it was a film altogether.

Ang Lee makes incredibly beautiful films, if we're talking about current directors. That man has a talent for utterly gorgeous shots.
"Eppie was a creature of endless claims and ever-growing desires, seeking and loving sunshine, and living sounds, and living movements; making trial of everything, with trust in new joy, and stirring the human kindness in all eyes that looked on her[...]The gold had asked that he should sit weaving longer and longer, deafened and blinded more and more to all things except the monotony of his loom and the repetition of his web; but Eppie called him away from his weaving, and made him think all its pauses a holiday, reawakening his senses with her fresh life, even to the old winter-flies that came crawling forth in the early spring sunshine, and warming him into joy because she had joy." - George Eliot, Silas Marner

Stanley Kubriks. Followed by Spileberg, Quieten Tarantino and, Ridley Scott. Irvin Kershner gets an honorable mention. Mostly because he didn't do much of note other than Empire Strikes Back but Empire is easily among the best films ever made.

Steven Spielberg
Guillermo Del Toro
Bryan Singer
Joss Whedon

Those are the only directors I can think of whose projects have never, ever disappointed me.

Tarantino's good, but a bit uneven (Pulp Fiction was just plain overrated, and Django Unchained was about 25 minutes too long).
Tim Burton's been on a roll since the mid-'90s, but I just didn't get the appeal of The Nightmare Before Christmas so I can't include him.
I've liked some of Kubrick's other movies, but 2001 is the most stupefyingly dull movie I've ever seen... I have yet to stay awake for the entire thing, and am starting to wonder why I keep trying.
J.J. Abrams doesn't direct his own movies, he hands the camera to a monkey on crystal meth. Sorry, but I like to know what the fuck is going on during fight scenes.
James Cameron is really stuck on himself, and it shows through in some of his recent films. Just like a girl who knows she's hot, it's a big turnoff.
Ridley Scott... if he hadn't gone handheld with Robin Hood, maybe. It looked like a J.J. Abrams film (see above), so it sucked.

i don't watch movies that much but i've went out of my way to watch a few recently. of those i watched the best was either The Thing or Full Metal Jacket. former is John Carpenter, latter is Stanley Kubrick. i'm pretty unlearned in the way of cinema though. i just enjoyed those.
we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.
