Though its surprising given his apparent unwillingness to take this job before, this appears to be true.

Personally I think its a good choice.
"Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

Abrams directing Star Trek and Star Wars? That's got to be, like, illegal or something.

Directing for two tired franchises can't be that taxing.

Im pumped! Star Trek has always been the superior franchise so maybe some of Star Treks greatness will rub off onto Star Wars.

Goods things and bad things about the next star wars movie.
Good things
1. It isn't seeming like a non-cannon idiotic clone wars thingy (press reports say it is probably post return of the jedi)
2. JJ Abrahams is a good director
3. Disney has Lucasfilm breathing down their neck
Bad things
-Its Disney
-JJ Abrhams directed the new star trek movie, which i kind of didn't like
-Everything post return of the jedi is already covered by a book or other extended universe thingy

honestly, the two are somewhat apples and oranges. Star Wars is arguably more high-tech (hyper drive being far faster than warp speed and such) however Star Wars is far less politically advanced and a very medeival story. It seems to m like an allegory to the fall of the Roman Republic (Chancellor Palpatine being the Julius Ceaser that lived)

I was PO'd that Disney bought Lucasfilm, but if they've got JJ Abrams on the deal, there appears to be hope.

Well yeah but Palpatine died after running the empire for years, whereas Ceaser was killed practically before that.

I've always just thought Star Wars was more fairy tale like while Star Trek is more grown up in a way. Kinda like comparing Lord of the Rings to Game of Thrones.

That gives me a little more faith in this movie. Is it true that the old actors like Mark Hamill are returning too? I read somewhere that they were expressing interest in reprising their roles.

I've never been able to get into Star Trek.... The only reason I wanted to watch the new one was because Sylar was in it, but I still haven't gotten around to watching it...

I’m a hardcore fan of Star Wars and recently got into Star Trek (great franchise, by the way), so this is sort of odd seeing this crossover. I like J.J. Abrams work, but being part of Star Trek, plus Disney making Star Wars, might be a deterrent. Oh, and I really thought that if they made it about the Yuuzhan Vong War, it could have been pretty amazing. But, alas, this is not the case.
I just want you to please note that any knowledge I show throughout NS is based off of a 3rd grade education. All this means is that I probably know absolutely nothing about any subject I post about.
Thank God for Wikipedia!

I was hoping for Lawrence Kasdan. The guy who co-wrote the best one in the series, Empire. If Star Trek is anything to go by, this will be Star Wars, presented by Mountain Dew, the most extreme Star Wars ever!
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE OF STAR WARS AND IT IS:

Postby The Corparation » Sat Jan 26, 2013 8:10 pm

LENS FLARE

Sci-fi director JJ Abrams will head up the seventh Star Wars film, Lucasfilm owner Walt Disney Co has said.

Star Wars creator George Lucas said he was the "ideal choice" to direct the movie - due out in 2015 - adding "the legacy couldn't be in better hands".

It will be scripted by Oscar-winning writer Michael Arndt.

Abrams, who co-created Lost and directed the Star Trek reboot, said he was "more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid".

In October, Disney announced it had bought Lucasfilm for $4.05bn (£2.5bn) and was committed to three new films.

Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who will produce the films, said Abrams was "the perfect director to helm this".

"Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise - he understands the essence of the Star Wars experience," she said in a statement.
JJ Abrams Abrams said it was "an absolute honour" to direct a Star Wars film

Abrams, who has also directed films including Mission: Impossible III and Super 8, said in a 2009 interview with the Los Angeles Times that, "as a kid, Star Wars was much more my thing than Star Trek was".

The original Star Wars trilogy - which consists of the original film in 1977, 1980's The Empire Strikes Back and 1983's Return of the Jedi - was always envisioned by Lucas as the central chunk of a nine-movie cycle.

The films followed the fortunes of young hero Luke Skywalker, cocky pilot Han Solo and the feisty Princess Leia as they battled against the Galactic Empire.

A trilogy of Star Wars prequels - 1999's The Phantom Menace, 2002's Attack of the Clones and 2005's Revenge of the Sith - followed.

Disney has previously said Lucas would remain as a creative consultant on the series.

In October, he revealed he had written story treatments for the seventh, eighth and ninth instalments which he would hand over to Kennedy.

So yeah Abrams is the pick for Episode 7. Personally I'm less than thrilled about this. He did a poor job keeping the spirit of Star Trek when he made the reboot and I have fears of him doing the same with the Star Wars sequel.

I for one am not looking forward to the inevitable lensflare. Les than happy with how he handled the Star Trek reboot. He really didn't capture the spirit of the original series, and I have doubts about his ability to capture the spirit of the original star wars films.
