best trilogy of all time

Postby New Sparta 1309 » Tue Jan 15, 2013 6:04 pm

so we are going to try and keep this focused on just movie trilogies and avoid franchises as the majority of them just got worse and worse. Now I love all the movies listed, except godfather 3, but my favorite is LOTR.

Six now.

That aside, why do we have a cultural obsession with making things into trilogies? What's wrong with leaving something at only two, or expanding it into four or five. Not in the "we're making sequels until one doesn't turn a profit" way, but actually planning something out to have the narrative arc go more than three volumes, but not indefinitely.

At least, in my experience at least.

Inheritance.

All right, so it was technically a cycle. But it was meant to be a trilogy, dammit!

The first book was cliche and the second was boring as hell.

Third and fourth were alright.

That was my response. The worst part is that doesn't fit at all with any of the things that Douglas had been working on. No Talking Kangaroos or heavily armed real estate agents, and no trips through the nasal passages of a Rhino. I'll concede leaving out half a cat and gusty winds, as that was a Dirk Gently thing, but the others were very likely to have been rolled into the 6th Hitchhikers book when he got around to starting it.
