It certainly does, and it pisses me off when the eighth series screwed around with it, like those stupid uniforms they showed in a flashback with Kochanski, which were replaced with near-identical to the original ones in series nine. Which also showed Lister's rebuilt quarters from series' one and two.
And while I'm complaining - Nanos', why did you have to dismantle the entire ship in an unrealistically short time (nanos' for an android dismantling a ship three miles long??)? Couldn't you have just...made your own Red Dwarf and scooted off without anyone the wiser?

Red Dwarf's continuity is so broken, it boggles me why people complain about later changes when from series 4 An extra thousand crew members are added to the ship and Lister suddenly has had a relationship with Kochanski.

I can accept a series changing and retconning things over time, like changing sets in the third series to account for a bigger budget. What pisses me off is when an episode breaks tons all at once.
