Ahem, anyway, having previously not known this series, and now knowing that it is a pretty long series, I would be most grateful if somebody told me if I should start watching from Episode 1 of the entire series to get the plot to make sense or can just start somewhere in the middle because there is no plot or it makes sense no matter where I start.

Err...starting with the earlier series might be better to get a feel for the characters but there isn't really an overarching plot, no.

Well I'd recommend starting from Episode one, just so the basic premise makes sense.
