Am I the only one who (at first) thought the Red Dwarf in the thread title was a reference to Dwarf Fortress?

Ahem, anyway, having previously not known this series, and now knowing that it is a pretty long series, I would be most grateful if somebody told me if I should start watching from Episode 1 of the entire series to get the plot to make sense or can just start somewhere in the middle because there is no plot or it makes sense no matter where I start.

Thank you.

Err...starting with the earlier series might be better to get a feel for the characters but there isn't really an overarching plot, no.

Well I'd recommend starting from Episode one, just so the basic premise makes sense.

Thanks! With the earlier series (which I assume is the start of the series) I shall begin.

Sounds fair. Episode 1, here I come! In a few hours, of course.

Before I head off, thank you both for guiding me to a better viewing experience.

Why? and also, I found that one a tad disappointing.

Because It's called Back to Earth. While it wasn't the best of Dwarf, it clearly was good enough to bring on Series X.

I started watching from the beginning a while ago, but I stopped right after series 7's Ace Rimmer episode. After that, I think the show rode a crocodile over the shark.

I've watched Red Dwarf up to the end of BTE (which had way, way too many Blade Runner references for me to enjoy, though I did laugh at the Rimmer Midgets), as well as the Bodysnatcher Collection, which I promptly killed with fire. Better special effects are not an excuse for cutting out jokes!
I didn't like series seven much ('Beyond a Joke' was pretty good though), but I thought eight had potential if they hadn't A. made so many two parters and B. reset Rimmer's character development. Series five was the best in my opinion, though I've got a soft spot for two.

I admire and Like 7 because it was trying something new after the somewhat stale 6. However, 2 is my favourite and I have a soft spot for it because it was my First Red Dwarf. The Multi Parters in 8 are entirely the fault of the BBC, BITR was supposed to be an hour long special but the BBC wouldn't allow a longer slot. As for Rimmer, that really was the only way they could bring him back.

Me. I prefer Last Human to Backwards, myself, though I still have problems with it (Holly disappearing, Rimmer's son not really being his son).
