It's Cold Outside: The NS Red Dwarf Discussion Thread.

"This is an S.O.S. distress call from the mining ship Red Dwarf. The crew are dead, killed by a radiation leak. The only survivors are Dave Lister, who was in suspended animation during the disaster, and his pregnant cat, who was safely sealed in the hold. Revived three million years later, Lister's only companions are a life-form who evolved from his cat, and Arnold Rimmer, a hologram simulation of one of the dead crew. Message ends."

Red Dwarf, the British Comedy sensation that ran from 1988 to 1999, returned in 2009 and then again in 2012 for series 10.

The show follows the life of David Lister, the sole survivor of the crew of the mining ship, Red Dwarf, and his journey back to Earth. He is helped, or more often hindered, by Arnold J Rimmer, a Hologram of Lister's bunkmate, a creature evolved from cats, known as Cat, Holly, The Shipboard AI, and Eventually Kryten, a Mechanoid rescued from a crashed ship.

One of Britain's classic comedies the show has many fans, known usually as Dwarfers, So, all you Dwarfers come in. Discuss your favourite Episode, theorise how Lister could have his appendix out twice or speculate on the future of the Show. Those of you who aren't fans are free to come too if you're curious, I'm sure we can show you why Red Dwarf is so great.

use to watch the first couple of series, but after the Cat joined the crew the quality went down so I haven't seen the latest few series nor did I miss the hiatus.

Lister of course rocks, I preferred when the Cat was the random creature in the hold rather than a crew member, holly was fun (the male version in particular) but I never clicked with Rimmer (although Ace was cool:))

is it true that Rimmer has left?

Yeah, because it was Lister's pet before the crew died. I haven't seen the earlier seasons in some time now.

yes he was, okay let me explain

in the first series the Cat lived in the hold and would run around avoiding Lister and Rimmer - he was a wild cat with funky moves. This is the Cat I really really liked

later he got domesticated:(, a speaking part and even lived with Lister and Rimmer. He was no longer a cool cat just another humanoid...

In all honesty it was a needed change, they're done all the cat jokes they could in Series 1.

You what? Lister is clearly the best from the Dwarf.

yeah I do concede that, the Cat jokes were the funniest part of series one though.

I do admit that Rimmer did entertain me at times, but as I said I just didn't click and for some reason I usually just found him personally annoying (which I suppose means he was a successful character and I just identified with Lister a little too much)

I find him hilarious and not annoying at all. It's his complete lack of any likeable features that makes him so great.

No one has bought up Kryten, or Kachanski (I'm sure I misspelled that), what do people think of them?
I don't remember Kachanski as a character well, but I like Kryten.

That sounds fair, clearly she left little impression on me. Still, kept it from being a complete sausage fest.

I don't remember Kachanski as a character well, but I like Kryten.

Original Kochanski was half irritating, half relatable.

New Kochanski was 3/4 irritating, 1/4 relatable (so an adequate replacement for Rimmer), and smoking hot.

Problem was, she just happened to be in some of the worst episodes the show ever produced. Series 8 was abysmal.

If I had to pick a series order of preference it would be...

2, 3, 1, 5, 4, 6, 7, 10, 8, 9.

Edit: I would also like to say that the way X ended was... I dunno really. Was it good or not? I'm not sure.

Well exactly. The episode on the psi-moon as well where his dead positive traits come back to live and help them escape.

9 was easier to write than "That really shitty miniseries where the universe they inhabit seemed to be the same universe as Coronation Street, which was pretty much only added in because Craig Charles was working on it at the time."
