I view classical music like I view an old painting, a work of art that is sadly a total anachronism.

Vivaldi - Spring. Now.

Let me rephrase myself - I don't listen to it regularly. I play it on the flute often, but don't listen to it in my free time. I have heard Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and while they are good, I think they're a little overrated.

Classical music isn't a genre. It's a catch all period term where all music that involved a symphonic arrangement was lumped together. Calling it a genre, and having a generic opinion about it is ridiculous. The Baroque music of Bach is far more different in style from the high classical era music of Mozart than bluegrass is to heavy metal.

I started with the three B's.
Beethoven, Bach and Brahms and the famous pieces, then I kind of went with Händel for a long time, man that guy was good.
Currently listening to Marc-Antoine Charpentier with his famous 'Te Deum', 'Messe de Minuit de Noël' is great too.

Don't forget the 4th B- British band music! I love Percy Grainger's stuff.

I like to think of it this way:

In the past, people who were good at writing music wrote music, and people who were bad at writing music worked in administration.
Now, people who are good at writing music write scores for films and people who are bad at writing music join a band.

I like it since when I was 6th

Vivaldi (La Serenissima is my favourite... makes me imagine to live in a 1600 Venice...), Beethoven (the No.9), Verdi (nothing is more apocalyptic than a Dies Irae at max. volume), Mozart, Bach, .... but I've always hated Chopin..... too sad and slow for my tastes....

You could argue that a few classical composers actually weren't that good at writing music, and that film composers aren't that spectacular compared to some band musicians.

What makes a good songwriter is subjective, though.

were always effective in lulling our infant daughter to sleep!

And they were nice tunes, actually.

When my daughter was an infant, I used to play the Bartók String Quartets for her. She would listen, then go to sleep. It doesn't really need to be soothing music, it would appear.

Now she's nine and taking violin lessons. If I am fortunate, we will be able to play some of the easier Bartók Violin Duets in a few years' time...

EDIT: AC/DC is not metal, it is mostly Hard Rock.

Back in the late 1970's when I was a teenager, AC/DC was often referred to as metal, also as hard rock. It could be that today's whippersnappers have reclassified it, but back in the day, nobody would look askance at you if you were to call them a metal group.
