A bit funny to note though that those who think it's (anime) weird have probably not seen French works.

The Triplets of Belleville was rather...odd, so was this other funny one about a woman who fattens a man up in a giant pigeon costume to eat him.

Sorry, that sounds really interesting, but when people speak of strange animation thats not Japanese, all I can think of is "Afganistanimation"

Also another thing to recommend...real crude and simple, but entertaining without an end was Vampiros en la Habana (Cuba).

I really like The Amazing World of Gumball. Didn't expect to like it, but I do.

Anime itself is possibly derived from "dessin animé", or roughly "animation". It could also be the Japanese abbreviation for the English animation, hence "animeshon"= anime. It has a circumstantial meaning because in Japan, anime could just apply to any animated piece regardless of it's origin. So yeah, cartoon, anime, same thing in a rough sense.

If we are including anime. I'd would say Planetes, but it is really short and the didn't continue it further. So the Gundam series are my favourite Anime.

It would be more accurate to say that animé is a Stile or Genre of animated cartoons started in Japan in the late 1950's, and was inspired from US animators like Disney (Micky Mouse) and Betty Boop (hence the large eyes). Since the 1970's up until today, it has grown in popularity and has been recreated in countries around the world, including here in the US. I consider works like "Kingdom of Hearts" as anime come full circle, right back to what first inspired it.

Anime is certainly not genre. And it isn't one style either, more of a collection of styles.

you consider a video game a cartoon??
we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.

That's animation, which includes both cartoon and anime, frankly the only fundamental difference is one is made in Japan and the other else where, but anime is also seen as distinct from cartoon as there are anime that deals with themes; war, politics, psychology, sex etc. that cartoons usually don't. That does not define anime, anime just happens to present those themes more than cartoons do, a cartoon could just as well present the aforementioned themes and it would still be a cartoon since it isn't made in Japan likewise an anime could just as well not present those themes and still be an anime because it is made in Japan.
