lord of the rings shits all over those other books from an Olympian height

Lord of the Rings. The Return of the King was the best in the trilogy imo.

Lord of the Rings. Some of Tolkien's other works are quite good too.

Does this question even need answering? I'm an avid Harry Potter fan, but you simply cannot compare it to what is perhaps the greatest fantasy epic every written.

Lord of the Rings.

I'd venture that the trilogy as a whole is one of the best epic writings of all time.

Harry Potter was pretty good, but still not as epic as LotR, and at the beginning (at least) a lot more "kiddy".

The Hunger Games are barely tolerable. They're decent books, but why the hell are they so popular?

And Twilight is so much of a PoS that I would be insulting literature to call it by that term.

LOTR, it basically set the main idea of what is fantasy after it was written.

To parrot my compatriots, LoTR. While it may not be the easiest series to stomach (fuck you, elves; fuck you and your songs), it tells an excellent story and has a massive influence on our culture. Also, Gollum amuses me to no end.

Harry Potter was a decently-written, but ultimately forgettable, series of kids' books. On examination, it's intolerably idiotic, but it still has a certain charm.

The original Hunger Games was tolerable, even a bit interesting at parts - though I felt it tried too hard to present a moral question. But in the second book, it immediately became trash.
"Then I was fertilized and grew wise;
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
From a work to a work I was led to a work."
- Odin, Hávamál 138-141, the Poetic Edda, as translated by Dan McCoy.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.

I dunno why people bring up the songs so much. There weren't that many and I liked them. I guess it's a matter of taste but you can skip them without missing anything.

You thought Hunger Games was better than The Lord of the Rings?

Really?

Obviously The Lord of the Rings is the best of the novels listed. Additionally, any of the three movies are better than the other movies up there.

Huh, after reading the books, I couldn't stomach the HP movies. They were just... bad.

I'm also not super keen on The Lord of the Rings movies either - again, because the novel is better than the movies - but it still wins out.

Agreed. There are a lot of songs - but it is a 1200 page novel that entirely created it's own genre of literature. The songs are at worst easily overlooked/skipped.

Lord of The Rings, especially the books. To parrot a previously stated post, Tolkien's other literary works are wonderful. Harry Potter was decent. And Twilight... well... Not my cup of tea.
