Brazil is often said to be a good starting point to get the hang of the game, it's a civilized nation that's localized and you can focus in South America. If you start as a great power, particularly the UK, you'll find your attention being drawn off to several places which is annoying when playing a new paradox game.

Uncivilized nations are something you want when you've got the hang of civilized nations.

Sikkim is a single-province non-Westernized British vassal in India. Compared to Sikkim, Bhutan and Nepal are powerful nations.

I actually rather enjoyed playing as Bavaria, China, and Brazil. I've also used the 'release nation' function to play as Scotland, Ukraine, and the Confederacy. All fun.

It's in a good position, and the only great power you have to contend with is the USA eventually. Though they're usually busy with Mexico until they get their modern borders.

Brazil has some claims on territory of neighboring nations, so there's combat experience without the infamy gain. It's population isn't all that great at the start but it can grow rapidly mid to late game, you can try for the S. Atlantic islands for a colony and so on so its a pretty solid choice for getting a taste of much of the game.

Belgium was mine. It has a good size, easy to manage, and depending on how you play, easy to expand.
