Stories You Abandoned

Postby Continentalia » Mon Aug 13, 2012 11:32 am

You were young(er) and you had just finished a really good game/book/movie/etc. You enjoyed it. Then, even though you knew there was a sequel, or that it was a sequel, or whatever, you never actually got around to playing/reading/watching/etc. it. You abandoned that story, for whatever reason. Alternatively, you were in the middle of enjoying the story, and then suddenly stopped.

What was the name of it?

For me, it was a book series about cities that ate each other, Mortal Engines I think, I never read the last two books.
I never finished the Ender's Shadow series.
I only played Jak II
Never played the last Ratchet and Clank game.
Never finished reading Don Quijote.
Maybe posting in every single thread will make us wise.

I see that 12 people views your thread, but were too rude to leave a reply, so I will leave a reply.

I abandonded the "Series of Unfortunate Events" stories. I also abandoned "Bleach" (the anime tv show). I abandonded them years ago.

It seems like the people here have abandoned another story in this forum called. "City of The Forsaken, Adventure." Since it has so many views, and so few responses.

Ouch, man.

Anyway, there have been countless stories that I guess I haven't finished. I won't go through them.

I abandoned Zelda for awhile after I played Link's Awakening, but now I am into the Zelda series.

R.A. Salvator's novels featuring Drizzt Do'Urden. After reading around ten or so I started going nuts. I needed to read something else. I've tried picking up from where I left off, but always find myself lost from the time I last read it. I'd try rereading it and develop the need to stop yet again. I don't even want to know how many of those damn things he's written.

I abandoned Animorphs when I was younger (a book series) because of Rachel. I hated that bitch. She did everything right, was perfect, the best morpher, the team's leader was in love with her, always knew just what to do, and anyone who didn't listen to her ended up dead or injured.

And your weed stash.

And your bedroom door. Chances are, he'll rape you first, the Genocidal Bastard.

Believe me, you didn't miss much. I didn't manage to find all the books, but when I found the last one it made me wish I'd never heard of the series.

I did too, the Carnivorous Carnival was the last book I read fully through.

I'll probably come back to this later and add more stories as I think of them.

Thus far it goes something like: Inkheart. I never finished the book, even though I planned to read it's sequels.
The Deltora Quest series. I don't actually know why I haven't finished that one, as I remember it I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Ugh.... I hate characters like that. I gave up on Star Trek: Voyager, Stargate: Universe, and Huckleberry Fin.

Oh, and same as the OP—never read the last 2 Mortal Engines books. I want to read the rest of the Ender's Game books, although I can't find them. Beyond that, I've been reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy on and off for the past 2-4 years.

Ugh.... I hate characters like that.

In her defense, she was also a bit of a bitch whose answer to everything was brute force.

Oh, and lest I forget, the leader was actually her cousin, not in love with her.

I think you've got the meaning of the phrase " in her defense" confused with some other phrase.

Still, they really bug me. Same with Suo Pavlochinko from Darker Than Black. They ruin settings by always being right, and if she was a bitch and the only people who called her on it ended up dead or on a coma, then its even worse. Writers really shouldn't idealize any of their characters.

Lyra seemed to be calling her a Mary Sue, so yes, I was defending her.

That makes sense, then. :p

I started a book series called "Shadows of the Apt," bought the first book but never bothered to continue it. Never got into the Ender series beyond Bean's sub-series thing. Same with a bunch of Harry Turtledove's alternate history stuff where I read the first book or the last book and never read every book in the series.

I abandoned Jak and Daxter after Jak 3 - the story was OVER, dammit. You made three excellent games, no need for a goddamn kart racing game and a shitty third sequel.
I abandoned Ratchet and Clank midway through Tools of Destruction. I will probably get back to it, someday (probably when I get the R&C PS3 collection)
I abandoned my favorite ever webseries, The Leet World, at the finale. They planned to make three seasons of shows, with plotlines worked out for each. Then, they said they were making two seasons and a movie. Then, they said they weren't making the movie. I knew I was gonna be disappointed by the final episode, and never bothered watching it.
I sort of abandoned the Star Wars EU Series. They should have just ended with the damn Vong. But noooooooooo, they had to make a series with the stupid hive-mind Borg ripoffs and ANOTHER series with that smarmy asshole Jacen
turning evil
, and YET ANOTHER series on top of that. It's just too damn much to take.
I abandoned the Act of War PC strategy series (which I loved) because of their shitty programming not being able to run on computers with more than one core. Hilarious!

In my teens I once started reading a science fiction novel but, for reasons I can't recall, never got beyond the first few chapters. I always wanted to finish it but could never remember the title, though I did recall a particular incident near the start of the book.

Twenty to twenty five years later, I was visiting a hospital and there was a "charity trolly" of used books you could take from and make a donation for. There was only one book that appealed to me and, when I started reading it while waiting for the outpatient consultation to complete, I recognized the incident I'd recalled for all those years.

Needless to say I bought the book for a few pennies, and I still have it. It's called Beyond This Horizon and it was written in 1944 by Robert Heinlein.

I never finished His Dark Materials series. (aka Golden Compass series)
Never played the Jak and Daxter, though I played the hell out of 2 and 3.
Never finished the Star Wars: Republic Commando series.
Still haven't finished The Lord of the Rings.(Though this one I need to rectify)

Extended Universe is the NS of the writing world: everyone gets to contribute, so there's no guarantee of quality. I lost interest when the Civil War ended (because what the hell was the point of continuing it?). Second Civil War was good, even if the whole Jacen business was kind of out-of-nowhere. Or maybe it wasn't, I guess you had to the Vong series to understand it (nope!).

The Tiger Kingdom wrote:I abandoned the Act of War PC strategy series (which I loved) because of their shitty programming not being able to run on computers with more than one core. Hilarious!

Aww, Act of War Direct Action continues to stand out as the only game I can think of where you could actively take prisoners and it will always have a place in my heart for that :D . I never got to play the second one, but the naval combat looked exciting.

Velgast wrote:I never finished His Dark Materials series. (aka Golden Compass series)

Golden Compass was good, the other two got confusing and then
Lyra's dad invades Heaven and Lyra accidentally takes God off life support and kills him.

I gave up on them because my 10 year old self thought they were too creepy and depressing. :p
