There's a reason "bathe the world in radioactive fire" is always my plan B...

My problem with coups is that aside from placing your own spy in the city-state there's no real way to prevent them. You just have to sit there and hope the enemy spy is so incompetent that they get themselves killed trying a coup.

Bathe the world in radioactive fire is usually plan A for me.

Anyways, since I put a lot of work into the Germany game and I don't want to start up another and work my way back up to nukes just yet, I decided I'm going to destroy most of my cities on the second continent, gift the capitals to America, declare war on him, burn his entire continent, liberate the capitals, then sit back and play police officer while they try to rebuild. And of course I'll keep the cities with important resources (i.e. the ones with uranium and luxuries). So the rest of the world will have a puny economy and military. Then, as they continue to grow and expand, I'll repeat the cycle.

Now that I think about it, isn't that the plot of the Mass Effect series, only on a continental scale rather than a galactic one?

If I kill everyone, then who will I manipulate?

Nah, save the nukes for special occasions...like anytime Ramkamhang peeks his head out of whatever hole he's hiding in.

It's like Groundhog Day. If he leaves a shadow permanently burned into the rubble of his palace, then 300 more years of nuclear winter!

Pretty much.

Gah, if I didn't have 3.5 games backlogged I'd totally boot up Civ! But nooooooo...X-Com, Dishonored, Assassin's Creed, and the 2nd half of Valkyria Chronicles have to get in my way...

That's nothing. When the Babylonians first came out it was possible to get rifling in 900 bc if you were lucky enough.

I don't know if it's still possible (probably not considering that it depends on 2 free techs being the third policy in the rationalism tree rather that the finisher) but that's still really impressive.

I will be attempting this.

Oh yeah, and I once got nukes in the 1800s.

I was never too good at climbing the tech tree at high speed. But at one point I was living in a perpetual Golden Age thanks to the Persian special abilities. The Golden Age had somewhere to the tune of over 100 turns racked up and I'd invariably trigger another one during that time.

One of the nicer things about religion is that you can purchase Great People with faith, and even though the cost goes up each time, you could keep a Golden Age going for a long time.

That was part of the trick, though this was before G&K. I had a surplus of Great People, so whenver the Golden Age meter was a little low I'd top it off by burning one. Since Persian Golden Ages last longer than normal I could keep it going for a very long time doing that.

Too bad the game was too big for my then-computer to handle and I couldn't go two turns without a lock-up. :(

So, playing as Washington on a Pangaea with France, the Ottomans, and India. I had a city separated a bit from most of my territory, but connected be roads. Suddenly, the Ottomans come and build a city right fucking next to that one. I fuck around for a bit before they found more cities, completely cutting off Boston from the rest of my small empire. I Culture Bomb part of their territory, among other aggressive acts. Eventually I hire France to declare war on them. A few turns later, France came to me with a proposition to war on Gandhi together and I accepted, thinking that he was the Ottoman's leader.
Later on, after I had completely decimated the Ottoman Empire, I realised what I had done to Gandhi. Seeing as they only had two cities, I said fuck it and sent out some Mechanized Infantry and Artillery to take them. And so began a long and drawn-out war, as apparently the locations of the cities were highly defensible, even with just a single Trebuchet. Many turns later, after naught but a single soldier was left, I said 'fuck it' and nuked the city, then weakened it for a few turns with two B-17s until a melee unit could come in and finish it off.
It's 1909.

When in doubt or you might lose or you might take a casualty or it might take to long or just because you're fucking bored, nuke it.

Alright, I'm going to start up a new game in a bit. I've pretty much got the settings figured out—Earth, huge map, and probably longer than standard. I'm probably going to go militaristic, but with the goal of a scientific victory. What civ should I play as?

France. Napoleon's a pretty decent leader as his specials are pretty good. Although America arguably has the best special units the though. The b17 wreaks shit.

Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.

No, Napoleon is great because they get better infantry up to the mechanized stuff. Washington is awesome because of the B17's. The Minute Men are meh. Although Washington's special is awesome, 50% off buying tiles.

Just started as Washington. Great spawn location—three sources of truffles, two of cotton, and two ancient ruins in easy reach. BOO-YAH!

EDIT: Alright, I'm pretty sure I'm in the Florida Panhandle. Found three more cotton, two more ruins, one more truffels, copper, and captured the Rio de Janeiro settler.

Update: I've secured three cotton and three truffles across two cities, and have been exploring the continent. There are three city-states in the Midwest area, and Japan is on the west coast. I'm pretty sure Rome is in South America, but I'm not sure because Central America is blocked off from South America by a mountain. Thanks to some of the ruins, I've already got two policies under my belt, plus a spearman, and archer, and the archery technology itself. I've already had a golden age and am quickly moving towards another. Things are going very well.

Does anyone have any tips for Immortal? I think I'm pretty good at Emperor (I have only played one game, as Dido on an archipelago map, but I am pretty much number one in score the whole time and I'm number one in tech) so I decided to give Immortal a shot. Played as incas on a pangaea map on short speed (first time with short speed too). First went pottery-->mining, got writing from a goodie hut, went calendar and then went for construction. My policies were honor starter, tradition starter and Liberty starter (I actually wanted to go wide, but I picked tradition by accident. Herp a derp). Building wise, I went worker-->monument-->shrine-->warrior-->granary-->stonehenge.
Everything seemed to be going pretty well for a first run: I had made some mistakes (most notible one being spending what must've been twenty turns attacking a barb camp to get rep with venice only to realise that I had been attacking the wrong barb camp the whole time) but I didn't think it was anything insurmountable.
Suddenly persia declares war on me for no reason. My one city with a weakened warrior and a rush-bought slinger is suddenly attacked by two immortals, two archers and two warriors. Not only that, but my one spearman unit is half the continent away and weakened as well. Result: a quick death against a huge wave of enemies.

So what should I have done? Should I stay on emperor difficulty for a bit, or should I change my strategy? Is there anything I should know when playing on immortal difficulty?

Build lots of archers, and lots of warriors at the start. Or if you're having problems, maybe choose a guy with a good starting unit, like Alexander or Augustus.

Oh yeah, one more interesting thing about my current game: I've got it set so that every city and unit needs to be captured/destroyed before a civ is wiped out of the game.

I haven't tried that yet, but in this game, I've encountered at least a dozen of them and half a dozen encampments, mostly down in Chile.
