Nah. You're supposed to pillage their uranium mines to prevent them from using it. Or launch a preemptive strike. I'd advise you butter up some other nation and sic them on the bastard, or get them to nuke you, so everyone else will hate that civilization. Part of the reason I attacked Persia was because they had a monopoly on uranium, and seemed to be getting close to the modern era.

Fuck no.

As for your pickle, just get as many units as you can on their doorstep. Maybe even see if you can troll them into nuking your units, and therefore nuking their own cities.

But seriously. Pillage those damn uranium mines.

I always just win the game before a nuclear war happens. :p

Well I'm not at war yet. And I want to keep it that way for a while, because I know for an absolute fact they have a navy larger than mine. And since I don't have any cities on that continent, I'm going to need to go in through France and capture a couple Swedish ones. I'm not even going to try buying a Persian one, and France only has four so I don't think he'd be willing to trade. I think he used to have at least a couple more, but they've been captured. When I invade Sweden, should I liberate them or puppet them?

Annex everything. Never do anything else. And if they have a navy, just make Subs, or nuclear ones if you've got the resources. But subs will sink Battleships, so you just need to crank those guys out. And just finish off France. A quick sweep with artillery, or the robots if you have them, will murder them. But your main focus should be to destroy the enemy mines. Move all your units to their border, crank out a shitton of subs, declare war, pillage their uranium, then assault your cities. They'll likely attack the Swedish and French cities you captured, and you can use them as non-essential buffers. The AI should nuke the closest city to them.

I just conquered Sweden. In four turns. Problem now is, the empire's unhappiness is at 20. And when you get to that point, rebels start popping up. I'm building as many happiness buildings as I possibly can, but I don't have enough gold to buy any, and all the places that are building them won't be completed for at least another twenty turns.

On the bright side, though, I have plenty of uranium, and nuclear weapons production is commencing.

If you raze recently conquered cities you should gain quite a bit of happiness.

Yeah, but I need a foothold on that continent for the inevitable war against Persia. If I burn the cities, I lose that. Although I suppose that I could just reduce them to a population of 1....

Just build or buy a lot of fairs, coliseums, etc.

Even razing just one city can make a whole lot of difference, i find pruning out the unnecessary tiny ones can help considering their limited military value. Also it being late enough in the game for nuclear war new territories are hardly worth building up anyway.

You make very excellent points... I don't know, I'll think about it. Check the populations and all that.

Alright, I'm getting another social policy next turn, and I can't quite make up my mind. I'm either going to finish off the Rationalism track with the one that gives you two free techs, or switch from Autocracy (which I have maxed out) to Order (which gives +1 happiness for every city you have, which I could really use). Help?

Go with the tech. Just build a ton of happiness producing buildings.
Although, are the tech's critical? Otherwise, go with order.

I haven't enjoyed a Civilization game since Civilization II and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Those were two of my five all-time favorite strategy games (the other three being Homeworld, Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, and Axis & Allies).

Then again, I have yet to try IV or V, so I might try the latter. I just remember buying III because "omg Civ II was awesome so Civ III has to be awesome too" and being terribly disappointed.

FreeCiv's good, too.

Civ V is the best for combat. I can't imagine squares instead of hexes.

Also, seriously, battlegrounds? That game is laughably fucked up in the unit department.

There's hexes now? What in the dear Lord's name...

But eh. There's much more to Civ games than combat. Or at least, there were at one point. Not sure about more recent games in the series, but Civ II and SMAC were very complex in terms of building your faction to survive militarily, economically, politically, and socially. That complexity is what I really enjoyed.

Also, at least Battlegrounds wasn't Empire at War. And the scenario editor in that game was awesome; I'd pit Simon the Killer Ewok against hordes of AT-ATs to see how long he'd last.

FreeCiv's good, too.

The problem with Civ 3 I find is that it's often slow and clunky, and the combat can be a tiring grind.
I think Civ 4 and 5 are much better in that regard. The games just "flow" better.

The hexes instead of squares didn't make much difference in combat. Relegating to only one unit per square made a huge difference.

Yeah, that also is nice. But the hexes are nice because you can actually move diagonally and makes it easier to flank and surround enemy units.

You can move diagonally with squares, too, or at least you could with Civ II and SMAC (just use the mouse to click on the square instead of using the arrow keys). Not sure about Civ III; don't remember doing anything beyond wondering how the hell you're supposed to move the settler...

Bahahaha! Persia declared war on the Celts, and thanks to my defensive pact with Boudicca, I got dragged into it as well. It was kind of dicey for a while, but I finally managed to break through his lines and have thus far captured two of his cities, and am preparing to take another. And the first nuclear weapon has been rebased to the closest city to his capital.

I did a Germany Civ 5 game where I just rampaged throughout the Earth. No attempts at diplomacy at all. My shining accomplishment is when after a long war with the French, I finally got my hands on some uranium, and then nuked Paris, destroying it, and killing the army they had ammassed around it. There are very few things I love more than Civ 5. I'll be getting the Gods and Kings expansion soon, and then...good times.

Once I increase the strength of my Roman Empire in America, I'll declare eternal war on everyone.
Also, in the Roman game, I put Greece on the same time as me, and put Persia and Arabia together as well. The fucking idiot Alexander has fucked up every attempt at diplomacy that I've made. Napoleon just randomly declared war on me, and it took me a while to realize that the fucking idiot Alexander was putting cities right at Napoleon's borders.
