In my current game, I am Siam. To the north of me is Greece. To the east is the city state of Geneva. Those are all the civs I have found so far. I have two cities and I plan to build a third to the northwest. Greece built Sparta which I might takeover. I had one war with Greece so I could take their worker. I am aiming for a cultural victory. Should I take Sparta? If not, what should my next goal be?

Right now I am trying to make a map of Zeganas, and eventually when I have more skill I plan on adding a Zeganas civ, which will focus on gold and be powerful late game.

The Shoshone are now my favorite nation. Pathfinders are ridiculous early on, since you can easily start with a bonus pop, tech, and faith.

I really just need one - that extra pop early on can singlehandedly put me far enough ahead.

Oh, it definitely can. But it doesn't forever. And I feel that the Shoshone are merely okay in everything else.

I base my nation choices on awesomeness, not on benefits. I don't care about specific boosts. I just choose my favorite countries.
I don't think I ever checked out any national bonuses.

I've always been some snobby nation elitist on Civ, ever since I was a little babby playing the older ones. Bonuses, UUs and UBs.

Now that I think about it, I remember having Japan as a favorite in Civ III because religious buildings were built twice as fast. It was back in the time when I built everything in the building list because the giant list of buildings annoyed me, and I wanted it to get smaller.
I was 7 when I first started playing, so yeah. :p

My Civ strategy (any game in the series) has always been the same: Get it together in the beginning, and then blaaargh settler spam expand everywhere i win. :D

Certainly - but never underestimate the power of having 2 pop in early game and the free tech. Because most maps will give you at least two ruins nearby.

Also helpful is the bonus territory, which before Civil Service can cut rivals off from entire sections of the map. That's incidentally how I dominated in my first playthrough - I cut off about a fourth of the map from the rest of the civs until they had Astronomy, at which time I already had the good land taken.

That's a very valid tactic, just not usually one I play.

I've been playing Venice in multiplayer games, and they dominate, because I always build tall. I don't usually play wide like the Shoshone encourage.

Well, think of how obscenely OP it would be if you found a ruin late-game and chose a tech... or if you just happened to have one surrounded by soldiers for half the game until you're right up to nuclear fission.

You need the pathfinder, though, for that to happen. I dunno if you can build them all-game.

Can't, only when you can build a scout. But they keep the Ancestral Tongue promotion when they upgrade from ancient ruins.

Of course, the Shoshone really don't have much going for them if you can't find ruins or good choke points for cities besides the defensive bonuses, but the defense bonuses can easily keep out invaders.

In my current game (a modless BNW/GNK continents map) i'm the Shoshone, and i'm stuck on a landmass with Spain. At first I was worried; in my games Spain has a tendency to behave well enough pre-medieval era, but as soon as it has any hint of superiority over you in the later game, it comes down on you like a plague. Their tendency to play religiously made me think about pursuing a faith, and just accepting whatever they decided to adopt.

The early game went well enough. I quickly took the north and most of the south of my position (the west being dominated by a forest that would take too much time and money to get rid of, the extreme south being covered in tundra and ice, and the east, a seemingly endless expanse of resource rich grasslands, plains brimming with about 20 horse resources, all irrigated by three large rivers running south to north. Needless to say, I wanted it. Inevitably, so did the Spanish.

We had been friends up until now; trading, sharing resources and all that. Despite me saying I wouldn't form my own religion, I got a Great Prophet from a ruin and ended up making one, which Spain embraced. Then they started settling the southern sources of the great rivers, bypassing the plains but coming close to my lands. I took the opportunity to warn them not to settle near me, in the hope they wouldn't try and take the plains. Surprising, Isabella said no, and a few turns later, a Spanish settler was heading (I presume) towards a part of the plains near wine, gems, wheat and some horses, that I had a settler on route to as well. Luckily, a barbarian horseman came out of nowhere and took it. I stepped up my settlement program to take at least up to the first river before they did.

I decided to add a little bit of drama into the mix by going all French-in-the-Ohio valley on the Spanish by building some forts along the first river (which was a good 12 hexes or so away from my territory) and stationing units in them to take any settlers that crossed into 'my' side of the river, as well as any pesky barbarians with the same goal. Tensions escalated, but war never came for quite some time, then I got the message I was dreading:

"Spain has founded the new religion of Buddhism in the holy city of Madrid"

In five turns, I got three insults and a denunciation from her, before she finally declared war. Luckily, I was toting knights, crossbows and longswords, while she was pinging archer fire at me and sending wave after wave of warriors to die against my forts. I won, needless to say, and she game me her entire economy as a prize.

Now, i've taken up to the first river, and i'm moving the forts up to the second. Isabella seems to want to remain peaceful with me, and i'll keep enforcing my religion on them. But I suspect it won't last. It's only 1500 or so, so there's much more fun to be had.

So Poland game...I am next to a very powerful but allied France...lately they have decided to start a small military buildup on our border I decided to start building forts and reinforcing the border as well and they bumped their presence up as well...I haven't played Civ V much, is this a foreshadowing of a war to come or am I paranoid?

Buildup inherently isn't anything, but building up troops and keeping them in the vicinity for extended periods of time is a foreshadowing signal.

I must be provoking them then...the initial French buildup was a typical border patrol of several units, since I started my making forts they also bumped up their defenses...heh pseudo-Cold War...
