The Ken Burns/Lynn Novick six-hour marathon about Ernie Hemingway on PBS. Mrs. P-A America got tired of it about an hour in; well he wasn't very nice to any of his four wives and had the (peculiarly male?) talent for portraying himself as the victim of his own less-than-good choices in life such as taking up with women other than his current wife.

Me, I can live with him being both as good a writer as he was and as unpredictable -- and often lousy -- a human being as he was.

But frankly I could do without listening to most of the talking heads in the show discuss the writing rather than the life. There's a passage in (I think) A Movable Feast where he's describing writing at a table in some cafe in some little town when a herd of goats goes by. He writes:

The goats' heads bobbed.

Now Hemingway was perhaps the only writer of his time who would write just that. All the rest would have added something like "...like (something something)" or "...reminding me of (something something)." By writing just

The goats' heads bobbed.

he's saying "either you have seen a herd of goats or you haven't; if you haven't then no amount of additional words or ideas is going to give you the experience of having seen a herd of goats; and if you have then you know what goats' heads bobbing looks like far beyond my ability to add or detract."

So. Either you understand what Hemingway writes about or you don't, and if you don't then no amount of additional words or ideas is going to bestow that understanding on you, and if you do then you don't need any additional words. Just read the words he wrote and leave it at that how about. Looking at you Ken Burns.

Finished Jupiter's Legacy. Kind of meh. It takes skill to write multiple story lines. There was no time to form attachments to any of the characters. As a mark of how good it was…..just read it was cancelled.
