Recommend Me Some Japanese Bands

Postby Ngelmish » Mon Jun 18, 2012 4:18 pm

It's a straightforward as the topic title suggests, but if folks who know anything about the general subject matter want to discuss Japanese music in general, that's good too. So long as I can get one or two good suggestions, I have nothing to complain about.

Now, in short, I really want to get more in the Japanese music scene, but I know very little about it and have yet to find any good resources. Japanese bands I have listened to and enjoyed (and really, I've yet to hear one that I haven't enjoyed which shows you how a limited perspective can sometimes be a good thing I guess): Boris, The Blue Hearts, Dir En Grey, Midori, World's End Girlfriend, Ogre You Asshole and Tsushimamire. As you can see I'm willing to be liberal with the definition of 'band' and my tastes have some range. I've also heard isolated acoustic-ish rock songs that I was cool with but have no artists in that overall category. The only other thing I would point out is that Boris is probably the least representative of what I'm looking for since I'm not that into metal overall, but anything that's good enough I'll consider.

On other terms love, love, love Midori and what little exposure I have to it makes the Japanese punk scene look pretty cool as well. So, suggestions and general discussion are all welcomed and whatnot. Thanks.

the GazettE < my all time favorite band, eva.
Sadie
Shojo Lolita 23ku < they have a new vocalist now. I recommend their later stuff with their first vocalist {Sou}, their very first stuff is kind of.... Unpolished. I have yet to hear their new vocalist.
girugamesh
NΦA < probably my favorite single artists, it's terriblyterribly hard to find his band stuff.
Pierrot
Vidoll

If you liked Dir en grey, Kyo also has solo stuff.

I um... Listen to like a good majority of Japanese kei / rock music, so hit me up if you want more. These are just some based on what you already listed.

Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts, Boredoms, OOIOO, Mono.

Mono worked with World's End Girlfriend if that helps.

I like fripSide but they're not any sort of rock/punk/whatever actual band. A synthpop duo. So I guess not of any interest to the OP?

Also, obligatorily, Baby Blossom. Best band evar.
