Dont think so no, The covenant in the campaign are a renegade group of elites with support groups of the lesser races such as grunts and jackals. Hunters and possibly the engineers are in it also.

I dont know, they were poorly implemented in Halo 2, they were ok in ODST and Halo 3, in reach they were kind of cool, but i prefer elites, they are my favourite covenant species.

Maybe hastily in 2, but I still like the look and feel of Tartarus' pack. Their armor in 3 and ODST was beautiful, as were their new weapons. Didn't like the retcons in Reach and the later books, so I ignore those.
I know everyone prefers Elites though, since they fit the Honorable Warrior Race trope to some degree. It was a shame they got so popular that their previous actions were ignored and they were elevated to separatists to as to be spared the chaos of the Covenant's defeat. But popularity makes plotholes and retcons, so meh.

Well if you look at it, the great schism was integrel to the storyline, without it mankind would have lost, the elites basically saved them in H3, what do you mean retcons in reach and the books?
