I know that it isn't required for Celestia to be divine, but I like to think stars have a clause in their universal contract stating that being pulled along by a string or rope or whatever violates their star rights.

They didn't really have much else to go on, so that's ok.
Besides, when the whole "heresy" thing kicked in, you actively couldn't NOT believe in gods under penalty of something, usually death.
Even then, I know of a few "ancients" who didn't believe in gods.
