Speaking of, where the hell are Wu and Mako? We haven't got so much as a picture of them since Kuvira kicked him out of power.

Good question. Hopefully now that the main action in Zaofu is over, the writers will be able to fit the adventures of Mako and Wu into an episode (well, assuming Wu isn't dead :p ).

I wish they would have stuck with portraying Kuvira as a grey antagonist. Why'd they have to go and make her blatantly evil, with the whole threatening to kill Varrik, or the work camps? It was working great up until they decided to throw in the ebul things.

He's alive. I'm banking on him having some maturation epiphany with Mako or something, after which he comes back and wrests power back from Kuvira.

I think he was starting to have that epiphany the last time we saw those two, when Mako called him out on whether Wu really wanted to rule. That the prince actually accepted and owned up to that criticism instead of denying Mako's accusation does say something about his character, and hints that he has the potential to mature (and maybe even actually be decent at the whole "princely responsibility" thing?) Hopefully we'll see it once Korra gets back to Republic City.

Wait, not that I'm all for the Earth Kingdom becoming a republic, but what is so wrong with the United Republic and why is the Earth Kingdom better as a non-republic or why does it have to be a republic 'like' the United Republic?

Eh, I'm not sure the Earth Kingdom would really work very well in a republic format. The various city-states have had way more autonomy historically than, say the states in the US. Shoehorning them into a closer governing structure like that is probably an impractical stretch at this point in time. As shown in the first series, Ba Sing Se had really the most tenuous of control beyond the city's walls, and from the evidence available so far, it doesn't sound like the intervening 70 years have done much to change that.

They'd probably do better with a less rigid connecting structure, something like a sort of confederation or EU-esque setup; something that protects the city-states' ability to self-govern in most matters, but still providing a connected system to handle kingdom-wide concerns. After the late queen botched things up, followed by Kuvira's forced allegiance, those widely spread out city-states are probably not going to be very keen on the idea of any singular government horning in on their business. Maybe over time as transportation and communication technology improves, that looser arrangement could pull more tightly together, but that's going to take time.

You are right.

The whole situation with the Earth Kingdom actually reminds me of the vast Achaemenid Empire and the weak-moderate control the Great King had on the satrapies (especially in times of crisis). As you said, the key in Earth Kingdom's case is to, somehow, bring the groups of people residing in it closer together and make them feel like they all have some kind of a same cultural base. More like a common national identity. Like the USA. Or else each of the future Earth Kings/Queens will always deal with some kind of seperation/independence movement somewhere in Earth Kingdom.

An Earth Confederation seems like a good idea; I doubt that the various cities and provinces will be happy with the idea of a strong central government by the time this whole "Earth Empire" stuff is done.
