The Future of MMO Gaming

Postby Genivaria » Tue Mar 20, 2012 10:42 am

As I'm sure many of you already know, an MMO is a Massively Multiplayer Online game.
An MMO is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously.
By necessity, they are played on the Internet, and usually feature at least one persistent world.

The traditional and most common MMO games are Role-Playing Games or MMORPG's, some well known of these are WOW, EverQuest, TOR, WAR, City of Heroes, and Guild Wars.

A benefit of MMO games is the social aspect of being able to play with other players.
Recently however many players (including myself) have become tired of the traditional MMORPG gameplay and new types of MMO's are starting to hit the market.

These include Real-Time Strategy (RTS) and First-Person Shooter (FPS) MMO games.
There have been some FPS games as well as action games that combined RPG elements such as Mass Effect, Fable, and Mount and blade, but few have made it into the MMO area.

I'd like to talk about the future of MMO gaming and the possibility of adapting the RTS and FPS game play style into MMO games.

I for one would LOVE to see an MMO that avoids the tedious level-grinding and boring combat system and used more "Twitch-Based" combat as seen in action games.

Thoughts?

If you want the social aspect, usually smaller persistent worlds/MUDs/etc are better. Being in an MMO is like being in a city, everyone just ignores you.

Here's another example of an MMO game.
WW2 Online.

Honestly, I want a MMO that actually incorporates a good RP. So far I've only played one game that has a storyline in it's universe that the players get to take a part in, and that's The Matrix Online..

I thought that game was canceled.

Star Wars Battlefront III, make it an MMO with a 'constant battle', where the war rages even if no players are online, as AI battle against each other. You join a legion upon getting the game, and you serve with that legion throughout the rest of the time you play that era. Fleets are then deployed, you battle through space, land on the ground, and carry out the war on the planet surface. Whichever side whens 'kills' the enemy legion and forces them to re-spawn at the home planet. As you fight in the multitude of battles, you slowly rank up, gain more abilities and unloock better weapons and armor.
Oh, and during each battle, a commander in the style of BF2 is selected to manage the fleet, call down airstrikes and deploy vehicles.

But a game.

Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.

Best Gif on the internet.

It was, but the RP aspect of it was still awesome.
