It actually works out quite well when it doesn't land a crit.

Because I'm guaranteed to knock out over half of Ho-Oh's health on the first turn no matter what, as long as it isn't a crit. If I'm lucky, Ho-Oh will open with Fire Blast and burn me so Lairon gets KO'd at the end of turn one and I can move on with the fight. That doesn't always happen but it means that I can focus on slowly taking down its health instead of desperately trying to weaken it.

Of course I've fought it nine times already and KOd it every single time but whatever.

That's a lot of criticals? Too many macaroons for that 'mon. Try getting false swipe/hold back for it?

Eh, only gotten two crits with it against ho-oh.

the issue now is actually catching it. I have it down to like 5 HP but it still fails even the first shake check. That damn 3 Catch Rate.
And because it's so damn powerful I only have a handful of moves before it wipes out my team. When I caught Thunderous in Black 2 I just sat for an hour and a half burning through over 75 ultra balls before I finally caught it because I could. Can't do that now.

Sounds a bit like my fight with Kyogre. Took several times and a lot of various balls.
Deoxys I KO'd on the first go, and didn't care enough to go back for it. I figure I'll borrow my friend's quickly for the 'dex entry and send it back.

For groudon I just used the master ball.

In Sapphire I missed the MB though, and I ended up knocking it out and didn't save it beforehand so I never got it.

I never want to use the master balls. I should probably've used it on Deoxys, I still have mine on X I could trade up. Oh well. I'm sure I'll run into something else to use it on.

So I just used the catch calculator as I've now KOd Ho-Oh eleven times and had my team wiped once.

There is a 2.24% chance of my catching the Ho-Oh when it has 15 HP. This equates to one successful capture in every forty-five thrown ultra balls. I'm lucky to get off 5 in a match.

EDIT: If I reduced it to 1 HP I would still need 43 ultra balls. If I reduced it to 1 HP and paralyzed it (which I am not presently capable of doing) I'd need 28, which is a nice number but I can't actually do that.

Don't have any, nor do I have any TMs for any.

From what I can tell, the lowest possible numbers of balls I can get is using Timer Balls after 12 turns. Then they have a higher catch rate than ultra balls. The problem, of course, is that I usually don't survive that long.

It is not that much of a lifesaver - when you revive one, the target kills the other. Better off just throwing balls and testing your luck.
Or patience.
Or both.

HOLY SHIT I CAUGHT IT

HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT I FUCKING CAUGHT IT

*breathes*

HOLY SHIT

*breathes again*

Went through eighteen ultra balls and three timer balls before catching it.

The trick this time was that for some reason Rock Slide only did half the damage on turn one, so I used it again and dropped it to like 1 HP (their HP bar was 1px wide, same as when you're fainted).

I spent like $80000 in balls just to catch this damn thing and now I finally did it.
*exhales loudly*

*saves the game fifteen times*

The deoxys thing was a bitch, because you had no opportunity to save in between that and rayquaza. So the first time, I used the master ball on rayquaza, then got sent up into space, and accidentally killed deoxys. *sighs* Turned the power off, went through the whole tower again (didn't save right before rayquaza), caught the dragon with an ultra ball, and nabbed doexys with the master ball. What an ordeal.

Ben, I'd recommend paralyzing Ho-oh (I think you can get the thunder wave tm somehow) and using a couple of intimidate mons. Just switch back and forth between them, and with lower stats, it'll be easier to catch.

Ooooooor not. This is what I get for writing long posts.

Stat changes don't factor into catch rate. The only things that change catch rate are:

-Max HP
-Current HP
-Catch rate/pokemon
-Ball you're using
-Status changes (burn, freeze, etc.)

That's it. Beyond that it's just a lot of RNG work and division.

Supposedly stat changes mattered in Gen II and button inputs mattered in Gen I but that isn't the case anymore.

EDIT: Or lowering their attack means that my team will last longer and I just made myself look like an idiot.

Aaaaaaaaaaand just beat Wallace.

Desolate Land is seriously OP when you're facing an enemy who only uses water pokemon. His second pokemon (Milotic) took out my first four but Groudon didn't take a single hit from any of his mon before I stack-wiped his team with fire plum and earthquake.

Pfft, what a noob. Using legendaries to beat your opponents.

Legendary pokemon are like collectible action figures. You're supposed to get them because they're rare, but then you're never supposed to take them out of the box.

Hello, Smogon Ubers Council.

I don't care if they're rare, I just get them for dat base stat total

That's why my ending team in B2 consisted entirely of legendaries and my starter.
This is of course in start contrast to my ending team in Sapphire, which consisted of my started and five randomly selected level 100 pokemon with no real significance. I think I had a Claydol and a Pelliper or some shit like that. All lv 100.

Hello, Smogon Ubers Council.

"Hello this is Smogon Ubers Council"
"Hey, Smogon. It's Gamefreak. We designed a new pokemon. It's called Mega-Rayquaza"
"Mega-Rayquaza huh? Hmmm, sounds too OP. I think we should ban it from Ubers."
"But isn't Ubers the place where banned pokemon get to see action"
"Yup. Mega-Rayquaza is banned from the place with no bans"
