I don't think Fairy's that much of an exception in terms of strange typing. Being strong against Dark and Fighting makes a kind of intuitive sense, as does being poor against Fire,
and while the others (Dragon, Steel, Poison) are pretty much arbitrary, it's not much worse than usual. Some seem to be there only for balance, rather than logic (Psychic weak to Bug? Grass resistant to Electricity?) and others are just mental. According to Nintendo, the way to deal with rocks and bits of metal is to punch them.

Also, vaguely relevant.

Sure, they look cool, but I don't see why the can't just be megas. Also, GameFreak is gonna have to explain these things in later games and regions, which seems like a nuisance for them.

Fairies being weak to steel is completely in line with fairy related folk lore.

Wouldn't make much sense to me to have the mega of Ninetales as an ice type. I've always liked the variations on the same pokemon based on certain factors.
