It's kind of incredible to think about the massive improvement made between Generations II and III. It was a pretty huge overhaul for two years' time, especially considering that there wasn't as drastic a difference in quality between Gens I and II.

I already saw my friend play this so I know how common they are.

This game has me thinking about Pokemon a lot. Under Darwinian evolution for example how could Rattata evolve to be purple? Don't they have any predators to worry about?

Ah, but a large number of poison types are purple (off the top of my head, in gen 1, the Grimer, Ekans, and Koffing lines). So perhaps purple is a colour predators naturally avoid.

I don't know, I feel like Gen II made major changes. Shiny Pokemon, time, online, gender, for Pokemon and the player, exp-share/all change, better bag, special stats split, friendship (sort of), and held items. I suppose that visually, Gen III was a bigger step but, in terms of content (aside from additional x, y, and z things) I feel like Gen II was just as big.

Also 16 gyms and much more content. That only applies to the games but Gen II was a huge step and it was great.

So yes, pokemon do eat each other in the pokemon universe. At least in the game universe.

I was gonna point that out. Isn't there one about one in the Pidgey evolution chain eating Caterpies as well?

Edit: Here it is, Pidgeotto in FireRed and X:
The claws on its feet are well developed. It can carry prey such as an Exeggcute to its nest over 60 miles away.

Yup. Always prefered Cyndaquil myself, but more often than not I picked Chickorita, most because there are so many cool fire pokemon to choose from in gen 2

Oh, great, people are starting to get serious about IVs in Pokemon Go now too. I hate that particular brand of competitive battling in the main games (not the technique of IV training specifically, but rather the elitism and superiority complex among those who bother with it), I'm only going to hate it more when grown people are using it to get a one-up over little kids the way I know they will with PoGo.

Yo Cyndaquil is for life
Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Gen II has the best three elemental starters in my opinion, especially the first stage. Though, that's mostly because I tend to dislike Pokemon I perceive as too humanoid (Sceptile, Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, all from Kalos) or question how they move and survive in the wild (Empoleon and Samurott).

I love the Gen I starters as well, they were from the first Pokemon games I played, but I just have a soft spot for all of Johto. To me, it seemed like the underdog.

The catch mechanics are very different. There are also differences with regards to crits. But yeah I'm thinking more about the aesthetics and interface.

As for the 16 badges... I mean they got that for free, didn't they?

Also, do you guys have any thoughts to what the strange letters in Pokemon Go are? The ones when you double tap when have an egg selected (like you're about to start incubation). I've heard it's been called the Missingno something or other for obvious reasons. To me it looks like a bunch of reflected letters and numbers, including an e with an accent (as in Pokémon). Ideas?

I, like, don't even look at those for battle purposes, just to get an idea of my Pokemon's personality. I'm a role player at heart.

I really don't understand why Nintendo put IVs in the games. Nature isn't too bad, and EVs are actually pretty useful, at least as of gen 6, with the open, accessible system. Even a casual player with no interest in the weird complexities of the competitive world could use them to create a build they like. But IVs are just a huge bar to an already difficult to get into competitive scene, and add absolutely nothing to the single player experience.

I think they just wanted another variability for stats. Though, I also do not like IVs to start with. I mean, with natures, each one is unique and useful in its own way and can all be useful aside from the five or six that basically do nothing and we need only one of, but I think that's a result of how nstures are programmed.

IVs are different because you usually want stats to be highest with few exceptions. Some IVs are arguably "inherently" better than others (for instance, when does low IVs in special attack or anything defensive ever count as good?). Personally, the only reason I support IVs as they are is for hidden power, since I am too lazy to think of solid, meaningful alternatives.

Though, talking about IVs got me thinking. What if self inflicted damage from confusion was based on the Pokemon's higher offensive stat and regular poison status had the same effect on Special Attack as burn does on Physical Attack?
