The Pope gives me random cash. Which is odd as I don't think I've ever played without be excommunicated. Luckily I kill all the other Catholics, well, the ones who can make crusades.

In MTW the Papacy is actually impossible to permanently eliminate. So, if I really need some Papal land, I restrict them to one province. It works wonders as the only way that they can ever cause problems for me (by themselves) is if some other bastard takes them out. If so I just withdraw my men.

Generally speaking I don't worry about being excommunicated, as I am generally to big to be harmed by any Catholic. Sadly, MTW loves ganging up on you. One game I must have raised every building from Russia to Southern France and still been -100000 florins or more.

You have fifty knights. Ten should be enough to deal with longbowmen. That way they have to be fast enough not to die. (And this is where TW is better than AOEII, thirty longbowmen can one hit any single unit. They are literally invincible until you get bored or forget about them. Probably why, on reflection, the Britons had no gun-powder units.)

I loved doing what I called 'Progression mode'. I'd gain ten florins for every enemy unit taken prisoner for the next battle, but I'd have to keep all units who didn't die/rout no matter what the cost for the next battle, and the enemy's funds would double every battle.

No. It's the same thing. The horses have to be able to reach the archers to be able to anything. When they can't they die.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Crecy]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Poitiers

It's all about the horses until the knights are close enough to do the fighting. You either hit the knights to stop the horses or the horses to stop the horses.

This is a typical MTW game, in some respects. I play with the XL mod in case you're confused that it doesn't look quite right. The mini-map is what is important. As you can see I can see almost every province purely by dint of my navy and conquests (I'm yellow) but that is important in the respect that I am using this game to illustrate my point.

The red are the English. They are having a typical game and are doing pretty well. I get the light blue factions confused (Novgorods and something else, I think) and they too are typical. Unusually Europe's big AI faction is the Genoese. The way they've expanded is typical of my gameplay... sea led conquest. Normally the light green or the purple would be big and own most of the Middle East area. The Genoese have disrupted this. The pale brown faction (the Hungarians) tend to look like that as well. The yellow stain in Italy is the Papacy.

With regards to the economy screen... that is pretty normal. I should become wealthier soon but I've been all over the place with my economy. Too much conquest. The rise of the Genoese is new and I need to have land, you see. Which is why I have a crusade. I'm going for Tripoli before it is too late and the Genoese get it. (Saxony is poor compared to Tripoli at its best and it is the second best province I've ever found... I have got it to 8000 florins before.)

If there is one thing I don't like about MTW's AI is its tendancy to just randomly attack me and them sic anyone with an army on me. This game is particularly bad. It isn't even 1250 yet.

The Golden Horde are easy to deal with in the original MTW. One just puts 20k soldiers into the province they appear in and then kill them there and then.

Whoops, I missed that. Yeah, I can't help. At the moment I'm using the Golden Horde to take out my enemies.

I did something similar to what Novograd IV said in Rome Total war. When playing as House Julii when i was against a massive army of barbarians that was numerically superior to my legions i formed a large Hexagonal formation with Legionaires on the outside and archers and such inside with the General at the centre and any cav with him or if there were trees positioned inside them. When the Barbarian hordes attacked they couldnt outflank me and were easily crushed in the standup fight. I then just mopped them up with my cav and easily killed between 1000- 1800 in nearly every fight against the Germans because they kept trying to swarm me when i was invading.

In later games is it unusual to have six enemies and no allies? I ask because this is the standard for my MTW games. (Generally speaking that six is almost everyone who isn't me.)

I hope they bring out a second Empire:Total War next :p I've grown so used to musket warfare, I cant remember how to play medieval well anymore.

Hell, they dont even have to bring out a second one- JUST FIX THE FIRST GODDAMN GAME! Battles are buggy, there's only a handful of historical battles and when I play the campaign as GB (VH/H) I get gang-raped by Spain and France -_-

I found France and Spain unbearable to play as. In Empire i sticked to Marathas (Beat by GB every single time) and Prussia, Prussia is the greatest army ever, went from two regions to all of europe alongside the Ottomans and was about to invade America when i won.
