There last three games were Shogun II, Rome II and Warhammer as well as Arena being, so far, a Sword/Spears and Shields deal so far. Shogun did have FotS but that's an expansion rather than a full game, and Warhammer has magic and monsters in addition to a bit of Gunpowder.

I'd imagine they wanna keep things fresh by going back to a type of gameplay they haven't had since early 2012 with FotS and not a full game since 2010.

That's 7 years since thee last dedicated stand-alone release of a Gunpowder heavy title and nearly 5 since FoTS. Assuming they announce it a year ahead of release (which they did with Warhammer) if they announced it tomorrow that'll be nearly 8 years since Napolean, which is roughly in line with the distance between Rome and Rome II.

If its a gun based TW, I think if they wanted to do a new time period then they could do age of colonialism circa 17th century warfare, pike and shot can be very dynamic.

It might be interesting if the do something from the end of the 30 Years War to right before the Crimean War. Might be a bit broad given the scope of TW games that do take place in the gunpowder age. But it could be intersting.

I can't figure out how to do specific formations and I don't think you can at all. For example you can't choose exactly what shape a single unit should make and how many lines there should be. It sucks. Making troops thicker for Calvary charges or thinner to cover more area was an important tactic.

Well, I for one am looking forwards to getting it. This only stems from the fact I'm not allowed to download any video games on my actual computer. Compared to other "strategy" (if they can even be called that) apps, Rome Total War seems far better.

Yeah it's otherwise the whole game. Runs pretty well.

I had a problem with the first playthrough, where it makes you be the Romans. I couldn't bring up the pause button. I couldn't for example save the game and had to rely on auto saves. When I beat that and started another game as the Greeks though it worked fine.

Hmm, I guess I'll see into that later on.

they said they're going to do an era they haven't done before, and correct me if I'm wrong (seriously do) but era is a specific time frame and has nothing to do with location, so a game taking place in china that runs during the medieval period for example would be out of the question because that era has already been done correct?

That is correct, although I'm not sure how exactly CA is defining 'era', just because it seems weird that they might cut out doing, say, a Chinese TW game if it coincides with with Rome, Atilla, Charlemagne, Medieval, Empire, Napolean, Shogun or FoTS.

Because that seems to cover a lot of ground from the Hellenistic Period to the mid/late 1800's.

Its mostly a matter of practicality. Because if one continued through the good part of the Imperial age, one would likely wind up fighting the Great War, and that involves technology and tactics that would essentially require an entirely new game, unless one could come up with a better cut off point.

One idea is for it to span Victoria's reign, or until 1900. This would encompass the Crimean War, the Opium Wars, the other French Revolutions, the American Civil War, and German unification.

Just watch they actually make TW: WWI just to cash in on Battlefield 1's success. Yes I've read the thread and am 100% aware that it won't work. Either way when they unveil the new game I'm going to be disappointed.

They haven't done a Renaissance/exploration, modern, or prehistoric Total War, but I think the latter two would just be god awful and the former would be just a conglomerate of Med 2 and Empire.
For anyone wondering, I joined this website during my edgy teenage years. I made a lot of dumb, awkward posts, flip-flopped between various extreme ideologies, and just generally embarrassed myself. I denounce a sizable amount of my past posts. I am no longer active on NationStates and this nation/account is no longer used.

Medieval II works fine for me, (expansions included) I can't get Rome to run at all. (steam copies)

It's pretty much over for Rome on Windows 10 since it's way too old of a game although it's strange that Medieval II works for you since it's also relatively old too. I don't have Medieval II on Steam so I'll probably buy it this winter sale and check it out.

Anyways thanks for the reply!

Tbh I'd be okay with that.
If they could somehow realistically simulate the changing factors that led to the rise of professional infantry based armies and the fall of feudal armies I'd be very happy.
Seeing events like the Swiss Pikemen defying the French and Imperial armies would be pretty awesome I think.
