then again going through 2013 albums i've heard i seem to think lots of them are from last year and not this one so take that as you want.

Really? Nothing else stands out for you this year as better? That kind of surprises me.

I need to get my list for 2013 going...I'm so damn slow with lists.

Same. I reserve 10 for the things I like absolute best in a category and can't see ever being outright bested by anything. They have to almost give me an orgasm with their awesomeness to even qualify. The idea of 1 a year seems odd for me. I think I have one or two things I give a 10/10 to in total over all categories of things.

For me, there is already 3 full length albums and one EP that are 10/10.
But that's just because I'm easy to please.

Seriously.. I haven't heard a 10/10 this year.
A few 9's though. Some more 8's.

And don't put Lorde her album as #1, because Buzzcut Season is weak, so is Still Sane and White Teeth Teens is meh-tier.
Not really a 10/10, more like a 8/10.

i've heard two certain 10/10 albums (or 9.5/10, at least. that last ½ is a pretty intangible amount) this year; the greatest generation and the blackest beautiful

i've yet to check out deafhaven and carcass' new albums, but i've heard they're stellar also

I don't know how you all choose 10/10 albums. I only have a few albums where I like each and every song, so those are the best. :p

They have to almost give me an orgasm with their awesomeness to even qualify. The idea of 1 a year seems odd for me. I think I have one or two things I give a 10/10 to in total over all categories of things.

I have been strangely more generous with TV shows, movies, and games when giving things a 10, when I do rate something high. I gave Game of Thrones a 10. I gave Bridge to Terabithia a 10 because it had such a big part in my childhood, and changed me as a person. But do those really deserve a 10 entirely? I'm not sure.

My Game of the Year, The Last of Us, I pretty much give a 10 in all aspects. It has my Soundtrack of the Year, my Story of the Year, some of the best characters, and so on and so forth, but I don't know if 10's being generous or not.

Meanwhile, I can't think of one album I'd probably rate a 10 anymore. Before, sure, but now? Not really any.

Calorax wrote:No year has ever produced a ten

I am someone who isn't a fan of 5 star ratings, so I always go with 10 stars (Which is why I dislike Netflix' rating system), but I don't think I could rate things BETWEEN each star properly at all :P

I could use Anthony Fantano's system, though. A light 9, strong 9, that sort.

Mayane wrote:And don't put Lorde her album as #1, because Buzzcut Season is weak, so is Still Sane and White Teeth Teens is meh-tier.

I was thinking a 7 for my rating or so. Maybe an 8 if I'm being generous.

I like it, but I still wouldn't rate it that high to be honest.

Either way, that's a huge step up from the 4's and 5's (if not worse) I'd usually rate a mainstream pop album, if I ever fully listened through a pop album on the radio.

Atletius wrote:My 10/10s are Random Access Memories and In Love, by Daft Punk and Peace respectfully.

I'd give Random Access Memories a 5 for me, honestly. Only really liked 3 songs quite a bit and the rest were pretty boring for me.

I have a few 9/10's this year I'd say but that's about it. Shaking the Habitual is definitely a 9, and General Dome I am thinking of it as a 9 but I'm not entirely sure yet. Which is why Shaking the Habitual is my top album because I'm not unsure about that one at all.

...Like Clockwork ended up mostly boring me, as well...One song on it I really quite like but a few songs just sounded like boring generic rock, and like how my dad put it, just like any ol' Queens of the Stone Age song.

There's some good songs certainly, but overall I didn't think it was that special.

Just my opinion of course.

people do take them as absolutes, and they also tend to look at the score and not the writing behind it. that makes it a bad system because it's contrary to how normal people work. if you try to defend it by saying "well... those people are dumb!" you're not doing any better to make them smarter

cf. employees at a studio needed a 80% rating on metacritic to get bonuses but since most reviewers gave it 4/5, which is considered a good score, it ended up just shy of an 80%, about 78 if i recall

rating with numbers takes away from the actual review aspect of the piece. you're either giving too much thought to the number score, and then why even bother writing a review, or it's a useless tack on that's better explained in writing anyway.

I actually agree with this. My dad and I personally can't stand Metacritic because it is a compilation of a bunch of reviews, a lot of shitty ones like "I don't like fantasy games but I played this fantasy game anyway, 2/10!". It's just a stupid system.

This is when I think Kotaku's review system is the best. It of course has its flaws, but it is much better then stupid Metacritic. People follow Metacritic too much and it has caused problems because of it.

Number scores feel BETTER in music to me, but I can still see the flaws with it. Video games, movies, and shows I don't know if I really agree with the number scores all that much.

Besides: I rarely take reviewers seriously, anyway. I've liked plenty of things that get 50% Rotten Tomatoes %, or worse, which is usually done on weird obscure things that don't fit the usual "Formula" or whatever.

It works for my own personal rankings, but overall I just really don't like reviews of stuff in general.

The highest rating I have given this year is an 8.7, or a "light 9" in Fantano's system. Though there are still several albums I need to listen to over Winter Break before my 2013 list is complete.
