Nickelback was the first band I ever liked and is the reason I got into rock music, so yes, they are a rock band. I never knew so many people disliked them. They have really fun songs and manage to be catchy and heavy. Their first few albums were even harder than their popular music now and might even be considered metal. Like the song "Never Again" They also do a good job of conveying emotions int heir music and writing about lots of different things, which is another reason I like them. I think they used to be hard rock or even metal but now I think they are pop rock. But still they are always been a rock band definitely.

we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.

Mildly distorded guitar. Check.
Blues inspired scales. Check.
Bassist that is kept in the background and overlooked strongly. Check.
Lyrics about drugs, sex, and manliness. Check.

Technically, Nickelback is a rock band. Doesnt make them good though.

The answer is yes. Anyone saying anything else is denying facts.
Whether or not they have anything resembling quality, well that is a good question.
And the answer to that, is no.

Nickelback is as much a rock band as Lil' Wayne is a rapper.

So what genre would you put them under. Or are you saying that a lack of talent gives you a right to usurp a genre from them that they are clearly performing?

I know they're not that original but their music is fun, has good meaning, conveys emotion and is performed well/ A band doesn't have to be revolutionary or that skilled to be considered good. Nickelback does what they set out to do and they do it well.

Actually it just feels designed to bring in the dough. Which yeah, I guess when you put it that way, they do do it well.

Nickelback suck.

Want real rock? Throw on some Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath (technically metal, but their earlier stuff blurs the line between them somewhat), or pretty much any rock from the late 60s through the 70s. It'll blow the smeg outta just about anything produced in the last 20 years.

Not necessarily. Sonic Youth were more cacophonous than much of the punk that was contemporary to them.

Everything in defining genres is "not necessarily". ;)

If I recall, it was an alternative to punk. People who liked the sound, the idea, but not the culture of it.

Alternative Rock is just a different sound in the 80s and 90s that didn't fit into anything that really came before it. It had nothing to do with Punk really.

Meh, I tend to disagree. A lot of current Post-Hardcore bands use the sound that was developed partially by ATDI. Even though a lot of the new bands aren't great and don't play the 90s style, it certainly sounds like a permutation of the ATDI sound with some Pop thrown in.

Do you actually think those are the distinguishing characteristics of rock music?
