That's what I do, and I'm not even level 20.

He probably put it away in a chest that wasn't in one of his houses. Things can be taken if they aren't in a secure chest.

It hasn't happened to me but it can happen, though I am amazed that when you throw something away on the ground it can stay there for weeks. I dropped a bunch of useless stuff like goblets and plates and clothes in the middle of Whiterun, I come back a week later and it is still in the streets and in front of the Jarl's throne.

You would think that there would be people cleaning the streets and the hold.

Or today when I discover a big corruption conspiracy in Markarth, and they chuck me in jail and go "No one escapes from this jail". It took me all of half an hour to get into the skooma trading business, slit some lad's throat with a shiv and start a prison riot resulting in escape for everyone. End result: Small Civil War on the streets of Markarth between the Stormcloaks and the Forsworn.

This one time (for no reason, as well), the game kept glitching, freezing, and breaking more and more often until eventually it wouldn't even load and completely broke (I treated the disk like a baby and the most valuable and fragile diamond in the world. More than that!) I started a charity at my school to help fund me buying a new copy. No one has donated.

That would be interesting to do. When I completed the quest I killed the three guards then ran out of the city. Only been back in Markarth once, after a night of drinking causing me to wake up in the Diabella temple, had to escape the guards again. I do go through The Reach but not into Markarth at least not yet will have myself sent to prison after I have done everything else.
