Yeah, you're still high. Blood on the Field was one of the most innovative, creative, and emotionally charged jazz compositions since Mingus' Epitaph.

Yes, and the Emperor has new clothes.

Yes, and the Emperor has new clothes.

This is the problem with empty hipster complaints.

Though I have to chalk this one up, I've never heard someone knocked for being too good. That's sort of awesome.

They weren't. I'm not really familiar with Marsalis' work at all, so I can't really judge whether he's good musically (he seems quite annoying ideologically), but Bluth never said that the problem was that he was too technically proficient. He also isn't a hipster.

They are. How do you measure such things? "Hmm, Marsalis' emotion rated about sixteen emoties here..." It's something you claim and then just insist is true. It's an empty complaint. Marsalis is essentially the Dean of Jazz, the first person to really fulfill Louis Armstrong's "Ambassador of Jazz" position, the artistic director of Jazz at the Lincoln Center and easily the most accomplished jazz musician living today. In other words, the most mainstream and recognizable figure in jazz today. Hating the mainstream is the core of hipster life. There isn't a current jazz musician creating the breadth of content that Marsalis does, but I'm supposed to believe that he's 'virtuosic' (good) and not creative? These are empty complaints that seem to worry that he's too good and not these other nebulous claims.

Not really, I've talked to people who can be described as hipsters who have liked certain actually popular bands and musicians.

Self-appointed, thanks to his huge ego that is inflated by his numerous sycophants.

the artistic director of Jazz at the Lincoln Center

Hired by people who don't know the first thing about creating jazz. Knowing factoids about the history of jazz is not the same thing as actually getting it.

and easily the most accomplished jazz musician living today.

Except he's not a jazz musician. He's a classical trumpet player with absurd and substance-free pretensions of being a jazz musician.

In other words, the most mainstream and recognizable figure in jazz today.

According to people who don't know the first thing about jazz.

Just because I might pump out 200 Harlequin romances a year doesn't mean I'm actually doing anything new, untried, or innovative.

These are empty complaints that seem to worry that he's too good and not these other nebulous claims.

I didn't say technical skill (which Marsalis possesses in spades) is bad. It's just not a substitute for his deficiencies.

Yeah, see, again, this is the problem with substanceless complaints. All they're backed up with is 'Uh uh! Is so!' You get a super edgy award for not thinking Marsalis plays jazz. You can exchange it for impressing five by-standers into thinking your tastes are sophisticated.
