Magic The Gathering?

Postby SaintB » Sun Sep 11, 2011 5:14 am

Anyone else a past or present player of MTG? Do you still play, what way do you play are you competitive or friendly? Did you have a favorite deck that you built or bought? I recently found my old stash of over 500+ cards from 8th, 9th, Ravnica, and Saviors of Kamigawa editions.

I used to spend $20 a week on the game getting booster packs and playing in tournaments; I still play the occasional friendly game but I haven't bought any cards or played a tournament in going on 6 years. My favorite mana combinations were White/Blue, White/Red, and Red/Black and I generally built decks around a specific theme or strategy (Goblins, Fast Attack, game Control, ect.). I was convinced by my brother to buy Magic Arcade and we play against each other on occasion there.

In a case I found one of my old 60 card tournament decks that I did well with (I almost made national competition one year and my worst finish was 33rd out of 200 players). Its build was designed to control the game's pace and if I could play it right gave me the ability to grind play to a complete halt until I decided to end the game by killing the other player(s).

Land 20 (10x Plains, 10x Islands)
Creatures:
Veteran Cavalier x2
Crafty Pathmage x2
Veteran Armorer x1
Pegasus Charger x1
Zealous Inquisitor x2
Sage Aven x2
Soul Warden x1
Temporal Adept x1
Sword Dancer x1
Seasoned Marshal x1
Courier Hawk x2
Suntail Hawk x1
Blessed Orator x1
Artifacts:
Kracken's Eye x1
Angel's Feather x1
Spellbook x1
Spells:
Fishliver Oil x2
Confiscate x1
Sacred Nectar x2
Ocular Halo x1
Spirit Link x1
Steal Artifact x1
Story Circle x2
Concerted Effort x1
Trade Routes x1
Glorious Anthem x1
Cowardice x1
Index x1
Mind Bend x3
Annex x1
Telepathy x1

None of the creatures started with higher than attack power 2 but they all had an ability that complimented the other cards or gave me some other kind of benefit. Most of the cards had extremely cheap costs as well. When you can flood the playing field with a bunch of 2/2 flying creatures with vigilance and first strike that can be made unblockable you can do surprising damage to certain players. The mind bend cards allowed me to make changes to creature abilities like changing the Islandwalk that fishliver oil gives to a creature into any other kind of of walk and also allowed me to change creature protections or even the elements my story circles protected from and they were often the most valuable card in my hand. The Deck also made use of a lot of area enchantments and effects and possessed several cards that allowed me to 'borrow' and use other people's creatures, artifacts, and lands. Finally the artifact choices were designed to help me stay healthy and/or gain titanic amounts of life and not worry about the number of cards in my hand.

Right Now, my best deck is a Red/White Burn/Immortality Deck. I have several methods of gaining immortality with it :P

My next best is a Blue/Green Infect/Graft/Proliferate deck, which uses Infect to place poison counters and -1/-1 counters on the opponent's creatures, uses Graft to get +1/+1 counters on my creatures, and then uses Proliferate to increase those counters.

And then I have a Black/Blue Ninja deck, just to surprise players who have never heard of the Kamigawa set, and who don't realize that "Ninja" is a valid creature type.

This girl in my homeroom at school plays MTG, I guess. I don't really understand how it works, though.

I'd be happy to learn sometime, though. Maybe if I ever see the cards in stores, I'll buy some.

It sounds difficult but its actually pretty simple as long as you remember the most important rule; the card is always right.

Goblins can be fun, cheap, expendable, and amusing to use. Add some direct damage spells and you got yourself a decent fast play build.

I built a vermin deck once where all the creatures where rats or insects the look on my opponent's face was priceless when I had 6 creatures out in 3 turns. I like to utilize the cheap and unassuming creatures because people feel less threatened until you rush them.

i think the game needs mercenaries, creatures with low low costs and cool stats but you have to tap mana every turn to use.

They have similar things!

See cards with Echo or Cumulative Upkeep. Perhaps a good merc card would be one where ANYONE could tap mana to take control of it

Yeah I already posted a mock-up of what I think a mercenary should be like.

I used to play in middle school and early high school.

Though my friends and I played in what we called the "midwest style'. We put down as many lands as were in our hands, but had to pay the cost of each creature we used to attack.

So we'd pay the price to summon the creature, and then next turn pay its price again to attack with it.

It was fast paced and fun. I haven't played in years though.

I play every couple of days. My favorite colors are red and blue, sometimes together, sometimes alone. I also like Black a lot too. I usually build decks around a theme, vampires, goblins, etc. My favorite deck that I have made is something like this:
Freed from the Real x 4
Master Transmuter x 4
Gilded Lotus x 4
^Infinite Mana combo, for use with main win method
Spinx Summoner x 4
^For Finding win condition, and as a prerequisite for it
Diabolic Tutor x 4
Beseech the Queen x 4
Vampiric Tutor x 1
Demonic Tutor x 1
Diabolic Intent x 2
^For finding cards I need
Etherium Sculpter x 4
^Makes playing cards easier
Parasitic Strix x 4
^Main win condition, use infinite mana to bounce up and down
Terramorphic Expanse x 4
Arcane Sanctum x 4 (Ideally Drowned Catacomb if I can get the money for them)
Halimar Depths x 4
Island x 6
Swamp x 6

Plus 4 Grimoire Thief in the sideboard as an alternate win condition

I used to have one or two competitive decks, but that was more than a decade ago. OTOH, I picked up a couple Commander sets out of curiosity. That looks like an interesting format, but I haven't had time to play yet.

I actually started up again recently, after, like, fifteen years of not playing at all. These things are actually cheaper nowadays than they were when I was a kid. I'm still pretty good, too, but lots has changed. Certain effects have names now! What is this?!

Oh, and my main deck is a pure Blue, but I've been experimenting with a Green/White on Magic Workstation. And some other odd ideas that somehow work really well. Just between friends, though, nothing really competitive.
