Black Metal purist.

I remember when I was 16 and trying to prove to the Metal world how kvlt I was.

Except I'm 25.

I've gone through phases in most of the metal genres. But once I delved into black metal I never looked back. There's nothing better.

I'm sorry if I seemed aggressive. I have nothing personal against Mastodon or any other mainstream metal band, it just bothers me when people obsessive over them when there's much better stuff out there to be found.
My Passions - Education Reform, Climate Change, Net Neutrality, LGBT issues
My Info - I live in Augusta, Maine. Pretty boring here. Lots of trees.
My Music - I pretty much live on black metal

Before the topic falls down the slippery slope into why popular bands are evil and should be shunned, have any of you heard of Aquaria? If not, I wholly recommend them, as their music is fabulous upon the ears.

Well, in that case, I retract my equally dickish remark.

I agree with you on that last one, particularly because Mastodon's last few releases were really spotty. Even though fans of Mallcore tend to like Mastodon, I wouldn't really lump them into that category of teen bands.

I used to be pretty into Black Metal, but the community turned me off and the genre as a whole just seemed stagnant to me. The new Atmospheric variants of BM don't really do much for me anymore and I find that I only listen to the big names of BM because other bands tend to just be worshiping them. Especially now that my life and living situations have changed, it's just really hard for me to get into BM anymore and be in the mood for it.

Is "progressive metal" or "prog metal" generally recognized as being a type of metal? I'm thinking TOOL and the like.

While that's cool and all, don't you get a little tired of just listening to one genre? Metal has so much to offer, I personally like variety.

My interest in Metal has almost entirely died recently. Punk seems a lot more interesting to me at the moment.

I call it prog metal :l

Then again, that's because they don't really fit anywhere. Compared to other prog metal bands like Dream Theater and Pain of Salvation they're strange.

As long as Mastodon allow Scott Kelly to do the occasional guest vocal appearance they'll be cool. Obviously not as cool as Neurosis but then who is?

I've been listening to Imaginary Sonicscape.

I kinda love it.

I know Sigh started out as BM but this isn't really a BM album, is it? Not pure kvlt anyway. I mean there's sax and stuff.

Regardless great album 8/10 would wear corpse paint to highly recommend.

Is it black and roll? reminds me of kvelertak

Much closer to Prog Rock, even though I've seen quite a few arguments that they aren't even Prog.

I think Tool fits rather snugly into Prog Rock, they certainly don't really have any Metal characteristics to them.

There's a problem, though, in that they don't fit into any of the subgenres of prog nicely either.

Fuck it Tool is Toolcore.

I think the first pressing question is this: Is "Toolcore" remotely or comfortably appropriate for this thread?

Man, if there's something I hate about Heavy Metal is the way everything needs to be it's own sub-genre. I know, it's not just a Metal thing but we do seem to take it to another level..
