The only one that could be considered heavy metal is Avenged Sevenfold, but most will say that none of those are metal.

Most of them are metalcore, breaking benjamin is rock.

Bullet For My Valentine-Metalcore
Black Veil Brides-Post-Hardcore, Glam Metal
Avenged Sevenfold-Hard Rock/Metal (Metalcore in early years)
Blood on the Dance Floor-Crunkcore
Breaking Benjamin-Post-Grunge, Alternative Rock/Metal
Asking Alexandria-Post-Hardcore, Electronica
Of Mice and Men-Post-Hardcore

None of them are really true Metal, and shouldn't really be talked about in a Metal thread.

They're a very strong prog DM band regardless of their concepts.

Nope, they were more pure Death Metal to me.

And? Metallica could be K-Pop to me, that means jack.

Gojira are technical/progressive death metal.

I don't think "post-hardcore" is the right term either. Post-hardcore refers to more experimental and dynamic offshoots of hardcore punk, not to poppier offshoots of metalcore.

Gojira has a lot of influences at play, but if I had to pin them to a genre it would be progressive death metal.

I would never call them pure DM. There's too much prog/groove/thrash influence for it to be pure DM. Especially the strong groove metal influence.

Yeah. Of Mice and Men, Asking Alexandra and Black Veil Brides are all metalcore/scenecore. Post-hardcore is a bit different.

What's emo then? Is that post hardcore? I've seen American Football called emo, but aren't they just math rock.

I think DC emo is post-hardcore whereas Midwest emo is a more math-rock and post-rock influenced offshoot.

I think Blood On Ice is better than Hammerheart.

It's best to put it in two eras, BM and viking.

For BM, s/t > Under the Sign, though Sign has some great, catchy tunes.

Viking Hammerheart or Blood on Ice > Blood Fire Death

Without the distinction between the two eras

Blood On Ice > Hammerheart > Bathory > Sign > Blood

of what I've heard thus far.

Don't think ''they'' did anything better than Shores in Flames; FIRE. Qurthorn is vocalist of the year all years.

I have heard most of Bathory's albums and Hammerheart remains my favorite. Maybe I'm just biased or nostalgic because it was the album that first got me into them and helped me get into black metal...but with epic songs like "Shores In Flames" and "One Rode to Asa Bay" it definitely deserves it.
Oterro wrote:Don't think ''they'' did anything better than Shores in Flames; FIRE. Qurthorn is vocalist of the year all years.

Hell yes. One of the best viking metal songs out there.

American Football is about as Emo as you can get. They are the epitome of the Midwestern take on the style, definitely nothing to do with Math Rock.

Emo is a form of Post-Hardcore, but the sound popularized by American Football is Emo mixed with Alternative Rock.

And modern bands like Underoath, Of Mice and Men, Asking Alexandria, etc. are Post-Hardcore. They definitely play a sound that's an extension of Hardcore.
