I'm heading off to a concert pretty soon here, and I want to try to get front row, and also have lots of fun and enjoy the music, so, besides the obvious stuff like not wearing the shirt of the band you're seeing or wearing a good pair of shoes or boots (not my first metal concert, but it's going to be my first time actually be on the floor (ended up with a side seat on an elevated section). So any particular experiences you'd like to share, any tips, any things to try, any of that kind of stuff would be nice to hear.

Basically, just don't be an asshole and you'll be fine.

And take earplugs. I made the mistake of spending an entire Carcass/Gorguts show in the first row with no plugs...my ears were ringing for 76 hours.

As a side note, that shirt rule is pretty much a myth in my experience. When I saw Death, at least half of the audience, including myself, was wearing a Death shirt.

Did you see Death or DTA?

Apparently Mastodon are working on a new album already.

Not exactly excited since I thought their new album was pretty bad and terribly generic progressive metal with way too many shitty hard rock band influences.

i don't expect anything more than terrible, expectations are lower than they've been in a while for them

might as well play Crack the Skye and weep about the old days

Hell, I went into their new album expecting to give it a 4 after that godawful single. But I gave it a 5 so I didn't even rate it as bad as I expected, and that's the lowest I've ever intentionally rated an album.

I don't totally get why you hate it, but it wasn't exactly reinventing the wheel as you said. In either case I won't mind hearing more.

There were multiple songs with just really bad vocals if you ask me, the music itself was about as generic as you can get in progressive stuff,, and some of the lyrics that I could catch were just outright bad.

It seems like if you start naming songs "High Road", you're pretty much gone downhill.

Of course this is just my opinion, I just don't get why people like it...at all. It just seems so blatantly obvious of an album that screams a band has lost its touch in my opinion.

I had a serious Leviathan/BloodMountain phase last week after not listening to Mastodon for the better part of a year. The new album was so lackluster that it prevented me from even wanting to listen to their older stuff for awhile. And I even liked The Hunter.

It's easy to forget how great they used to be. Maybe they need to write about mythical sea beasts again.

*sigh*

It is kinda lazy, but you might have missed the memo that they were enormous stoners. They're not usually the cleverest sort.

The Motherload, High Road, and this section of this song pretty much sums up everything wrong with the album in my opinion. Awful vocals in the first two (especially in the chorus), and that cheerleader section in that one song is just stupid lyrically and in general. Plus the boring as hell progressive metal riffs.

Sorry I keep rambling on about how bad I think this album is, I just really, really don't get the appeal people have in it as if Mastodon redeemed themselves after The Hunter. Honestly I expect to like The Hunter more when I get around to listening to it.

And honestly I didn't even rate it THAT low. 5/10 is pretty much my "Boring as fuck" level rating. Most of the album managed to at least be tolerable instead of outright bad. And the last and final track of the album I think is the only one I actually like.

So the new Blind Guardian album Beyond The Red Mirror leaked today.

It is taking all of my willpower to avoid listening to it before my official pre-order arrives in two weeks.

I've listened to a good few songs and enough to be able to say I'm a fan, but I've still got a whole lot of listening to do before I can allow myself to try to buy Beyond The Red Mirror.
