My dad appears to be listening to some Melechesh. The name seems familiar. They sound intriguing.

Also, what is the best Immortal album? I decided that I will give at least ONE of their albums a fair chance before dismissing them altogether. I just don't think I could handle a bunch of black metal like that.

Melechesh is awesome. 'nuff said. I love middle-eastern melodies in metal.

My personal favorite Immortal is a tie between Battles In The North and Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, but I'm a minority. The one Vol mentioned is their most iconic album.

I like Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, but then again I like my black metal grim and lo-fi.
Pure Holocaust is pretty worthwhile too.

Just listen to them all, since Immortal's sound evolved over their career and maybe their newer blackened thrash sound will be appealing even if the early stuff isn't, or vice-versa. :ugeek:

"Just listen to them all" is not a helpful answer for someone who's probably not gonna be able to go through all of them :P

So I got 2 recommendations for 3 albums again, probably the ones I had before...Damn it which one to pick?! Clearly they're the favorites :P

Sphynx is probably my favorite Melechesh record, though I can't say I listen to them super-frequently.

Hell Awaits 8.9/10
average with great moments.

ts;en: this album was boring but I did enjoy it quite a bit. Highlights of the album was Lombardo's drumming and a few solos. Other than that it was meh vocals and meh rhythms

How do you people go "meh" about most of an album and give it a freaking 9?

That's what happens when you ask a thread full of Immortal fans to name their favorite album :p

When I'm getting into a band, I usually read some RYM reviews to pick an album. I'll often be drawn more to a certain one afterwards. Or just pick which one has the best art.

Corrian wrote:What album should I start on? I've dug what I've heard so far for the most part.

I would say Emissaries. It has most of my favorite songs by them.

But do you know which one your dad was listening to? Maybe you should start with whichever one you were already digging.

They also have a new album out in a month. Dat album cover.

My dad said the album he was mostly listening to was The Epigenesis

Also, my dad was listening to them because seeing something about their new release reminded him that they exist.

Honestly, it's not that lo-fi, the instruments are well-defined and there's no fuzzyness or hissing. It's minimalist, but well-done.

I can appreciate Ildjarn in small doses (I add some Forest Poetry to my rotation every now and then when I'm in a particular mood), but every single song is almost identical so it wears thin quickly.

Ah, that seems like it might become an issue.

Part of Vidar Vaaer's motivation for ending Ildjarn was due to his 4-track recorder breaking (the same 4-track recorder used during Emperor's early days as Thou Shalt Suffer).

Everything must sound the same! Without my tape deck there cannot be anymore Ildjarn!
