I've been getting into some more death metal recently.

Anyone heard of Bolt Thrower, Jungle Rot or Incantation? Those three have caught my attention during my searches.

If you want some technical Blackish Death that's a cross between Incantation and Portal (but better) try Mitochondrion.

Not yet, grasshopper.

The IVth Crusade is a pretty good album by them. Listened to it last night and was impressed. Thinking man's old school death metal I'd say. Jungle Rot, in contrast, is simply brutal. All they do is heavy, heavy and more heavy.

A lot of great bands, Azaca, though I can't stand Alestorm. You get points in my book for Bathory, Amon Amarth, Finntroll, Electric Wizard, Death, Sodom, etc.

But I must complain about this.

I think DEP is pretty good, and it is always dangerous to generalize as you did there. Most genres have at least a few gems. Metalcore has Botch and Converge, Nu metal has Deftones, and emo has Rites of Spring, for example. Though there are more.
