It does require long exposure times to make full use of because of this, though, so it requires you to know how to maximize your armour (aka dont just point straight at the enemy).

I understand that (well...) but I have no idea how to play KV1 on maps with open areas it just seems so god damn unwieldy
it can't be that different from the Churchill can it

Erm, having played the Churchill(Admittedly only ~15 games), and looking up the stats of the KV1, they seem pretty different.

Tier V 57's have higher pen then most 75's at tier 5.
And most of them have a really good ROF.
I personally do my best with 57mm guns with the Crusader. I have no idea why I like that weapon platform so much.

I've played both tanks with 100+ battles in both tanks and the mobility of the KV-1 is way better. I prefer the Church because I don't care much for armor when the gun is good but most people are idiots and shoot the hull which really helps.

KV1 is just a bounce machine. Unless you know weak spots. One guy I killed with my Crusader thought I was using gold ammo in my Crusader just so I can pen him. But 110 pen is more then sufficient to penetrate the flat angles of the hull and lower hull.

Stock tank+ not at 100% crew makes it very very slow.

The M5A1 isn't all that bad. Having driven the US M5, I can really appreciate the more consistent damage done by the 47mm. It also feels more maneuverable at speed, although that isn't much of a praise, considering the M5 turned like an oil tanker.

M5 Stuart seems fun, but it's easy prey for my Pz. 38 nA.

AMX 40 shouldn't be a light tank, it has 40mm of rear armor; that's only ten less of the front of the NA. It also has a 75mm howitzer.
