Techno Music: Borg or Vulcan

Postby Kryozerkia » Fri Jul 01, 2011 5:15 am

My husband and I were having a debate last night as to whether or not techno (or electronic) music is Vulcan or Borg in nature. My husband holds the stance that it is Vulcan, as it is logical in its production. It requires the precision of mathematics and needs to be arranged in a logical manner in order to produce music. It is a game of patience and logic, much like that of Kal-toh. It requires a precise hand and time to learn to master.

I hold the opposite stance. I maintained that techno music is Borg in its nature. The ultimate goal of the Borg is perfection through assimilation; the adaptation of the unique and distinctiveness of each species. Assimilation takes the biological and technological diversity of each species it assimilates and adds that to its own perfection. Techno in itself is a compilation of different sounds brought together to form a piece of music. It strives for perfection by assimilating the elements of the music that is arranged to create a new composition.

Do NS agree, disagree? Any thoughts on this? Does another Star Trek species come to mind and why?

Neither because it awful.

Personal aside, I think it is more of a blend. Like a Vulcan assimilated by the Borg.

Well, its like you said, they are logical, precise, but it also takes on the different elements of music and combines them. This isn't exclusive to just Techno, but most music as musicians experiment with different genre blends looking for a good sound.

The only thing I would disagree with is the perfection. you cant get a perfect sound, as people hold different views, case in point, I think Techno is awful.

That's a good point. While you can't get perfect it doesn't mean you can't strive for perfect sound.

Your point on music in general is also a valid one. Though, techno uses existing sound bites and tracks to create a new song whereas with other genres the artist must compose the song itself without using existing sound bites.

I don't see how Monolake or Ken Ishii are awful. I definitely don't see how Aphex Twin is awful, but I'm not sure if he's techno.

According to my primary source on this music - the dude I'm married to - those first two artists are indeed good, and Aphex Twin is techno.

I would suggest that most music strives for order to create the sounds-techno has the appearance of more repetition of the sounds I suppose, but there are basic chords and what not that are used for many other types. Of course there is music that has the appearance of disorder, of noise, but one could suggest that the noise 'fits', does it not?
Not that I like to suggest order as a goal in itself (I feel I should heed Discordianism), but perhaps then, if most music is like the Vulcans, techno is more like the Borg Vulcan, as in it can use the other music and manipulate it to its will, as well as creating sounds of its own, to achieve the best that song can be.

EDIT:Of course, if most music is Vulcan then I suppose the music would be divulged from the Vulcan's deep emotional feeling-but in a controlled, logical manner.

This is a very interesting discussion, but I must posit the Tribbles.

In my opinion Techno music is still a developing genre. The dominance it is developing in popular music is becoming an epidemic as an end is not in sight. However, the phenomenon will eventually exhaust itself, reminescent of overpopulation being dealt with by biological limiting factors, while the genre will remain it will lower. As such, I would compare it to the Tribbles.

In regard to production I would agree with you and say it is an assimilation music or Borg-like. The music does not truly hold the refinement of other genres and allows the creativity possible by the mesh of other genres.

I think that techno is more Borg, it just seems to fit, but could you please explain how Techno might be Time Lord, I can't really imagine Techno as Time Lord, however I can imagine it as Vulcan but like I said earlier, Techno just seems to fit the Borg.

Why would the Borg 'need' music?

Vulcans like art, music is a form of art. I don't like most of techno, but I know what it sounds like. It's very far flung distantly like Disco, but muuch faster beat yet slower drop down melodies and much less lyrics.

Too fast for me.
