ah John Rebus, one of Iain Rankins creations. But i warn you if you do read the series with Rebus in, the bad guy is a little...predictable. Still good though.

MMmmm... Mito Komon, maybe? That's the popular J-dorama. I do vaugely remember a couple of books written be a western author that might be what you're thinking of...
