This is, personally, one of my all time favourites. The storyline has a great theme to it and the emotion in the film gives it a much better atmosphere. Cinematics and animations are also extremely well created and look excellent.

Kick Ass

I just love the film - I can't really describe it. Oh yeah, Hit Girl is awesome.

Scary Movie (1)

It is a laugh, I have to say. The general humour and parody mixed in with the thrills and fears of the actual film give it a very diverse, yet, entertaining film.

4 - Star Wars Episode III

5 - Spaceballs

6 - Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark

My top eight movies (in no particular order):

The Odd Angry Shot - This is one of the very few Vietnam War films that didn't specifically condemn the war and instead maintained a more neutral tone. It's also fairly rare in that it portrays how the war was for the Australians, rather than the Americans, with small scale battles and ambushes, rather than massive all out offensive. Besides that, the humour and the comradeship between the soldiers is excellent and the script was written by a bloke who used to cook for the SASR and who wrote a book based on the stories that he'd heard from them (the movie was adapted from it). Some examples of the film: Humour (1, 2), Politics and Fighting.

Kokoda - Another Australian film, "Kokoda" might be a little thin on plot and heavy on beautiful cinematography, but it does manage to capture the horrendous conditions that the Australians in New Guinea faced as they fought the Japanese, and contains some really emotional scenes, like where one member of the section crawls off into the jungle to die so that he won't slow the others down, or where dozens of badly wounded men (some of them even needing help to walk) pick up their rifles and head up to where the defensive lines for what they believe will be their final fight (which actually happened in real life). Plus it's an example of a WW2 that isn't either set in Europe or "America Rulz!". (First Battle, Final Battle).

Mongol - Epic retelling of Ghengis Khan's story, with awesome battle scenes and tons of gore? Yes please! (Trailer)

Up - Any movie that can make me shed a tear or two within the first ten minutes, with virtually no dialogue at all, is more than deserving to go on my top ten list. And that's without going into the animation, story or humour. Plus, it's a genuinely fun movie.

Australia - Yes, I know that a lot of people didn't like it, but what they forget is that A) it's supposed to be that cheesy, since it's styled after the films of the 40s/50s and B) a lot of the life/culture that is depicted is actually accurate for the time period. Seriously people, do your research before you comment on how "unrealistic" life in 1940s Northern Territory was depicted. It is entirely realistic, even up until the 1960s and 70s. Also, it had David Gulpilil in it.

The Tracker - I cannot recommend this movie enough. Despite the characters having no names and vast parts of the movie being conducted in silence, it is a magnificent movie, which looks at attitudes towards the Aboriginal people in the 1920s, while undercutting those attitudes through the Tracker's clever manipulations. And the symbolism. Oh, that was brilliant. The paintings and the gradual discarding of the Tracker's clothing worked very well indeed. (Clip 1, Clip 2, Clip 3).

Ten Canoes - By the same director as "The Tracker" , "Ten Canoes" consists of two narratives. One is a grandfather (I think) telling his grandson a story as a way of teaching him a lesson, while the other is the actual story. It's told in the manner of a dream time story, and the entire cast was made up of Aboriginals from that particular area, all speaking their native language. It gives us an insight into Aboriginal culture in the NT, and it's full of Aboriginal humour. (Trailer)

Avatar - Crappy story telling (but a reasonable story if you read the background info), brilliant special effects and some good lines (especially in the beginning). Inferior to the original script, but the revolutionary SF carries it very well.

Lol @ Avatar, prefer Dancing With Wolves, myself, without The Smurfs.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, comes to mind, really anything in the Dollars series.

As for Avatar: I didn't really like it, except for the special effects. The special effects rocked, everything else sucked.

Me too!

In no particular order:

The Usual Suspects - blinding film
The Great Escape - can watch this multiple times without getting bored
The Matrix - as far as I am concerned, there was only The One.
Lawrence of Arabia - it is like pringles. When you start watching it, you can't stop
Dawn of the Dead (1978) - Romero at his best
The Two Towers - easily one of the best traditional fantasy films
Spy Game - not sure why I like this, but I do

And for a few from the old home continent:

Noroi - one of the best horror films ever made
Ghost in the Shell - cyber punk to the max
Infernal Affairs - I found this quite gripping to watch
I blog to keep your forum clean!

Requiem for a Dream: It's just so bleak and depressing!

Waking Life: It's rotoscoped, which looks quite cool IMO. Really interesting, makes you think about dreams and death.

Pan's Labyrinth: One of the most touching movies I've seen.

Full Metal Jacket: Probably the best war movie, at least from what I've seen.

There's more, definitely, but I can't remember at the moment.

1. "Red Beard": Best movie of all time. Kurosawa at his finest telling the fantastic story of a doctor who is a man of the people with an exploration of life and relationships. Cannot recommend highly enough.

2. "The Killer": Epic John Woo film about a contract killer played by Chow Yun-Fat. Best shootouts ever plus a good story=epic win.

3. "Seven Samurai": You all know what "Seven Samurai" is.

4. "Che": Fantastic film about the rebel leader. Great cinematography, well written and acted, just overall a great film.

5. "The Wind That Shakes the Barley": Ken Loach about the Irish Revolution through the Irish Civil War. May be biased because I'm so pro Irish but it's incredible.

6. "City of God": Brasilian film about the favelas and the people who live there. Hard to watch but in a really good way. As fantastic as this film is I actually prefer the TV series "City of Men" by the same people with a similar premise. Both worth a watch.

7. "Stalingrad": My favorite war movie and I love me a good war movie. About the battle from a German perspective it's a fantastic anti-war film that also boasts some of the final battle sequences. The last major battle puts any American sequence to shame.

8. "Harakiri": This film is basically Toshiro Mifune being awesome and showing some chump samurai how they're chumps. He also kills like seven people with the ceremonial knife used for Harakiri because I guess his "hosts" thought letting him have any sharp object wasn't idiotic.

9. "The Godfather" (series): Ultimate gangster movies and I mean all three. Even the third is pretty good people just dock it for not being quite as good as the first two. AKA the greatest American films ever made in my opinion.

10. "Ballad of a Soldier": Don't know why but I LOVED this film from beginning to end. "Battleship Potemkin" may be the "sexier" Russian film but for me it's this story of a soldier who gets leave after knocking out two German tanks. And then everyone he meets decides he's totally awesome because he is. Basically check this out.
