It depends on what you mean by "makers." Hasbro is only interested in selling toys to little girls, so they don't care about anything else. However, Lauren Faust and her team are actively trying to make it appeal to everyone.

• Hasbro doesn't care who buys the toys. Now, the bronie market segment isn't anywhere near as big as the millions upon millions of little girls market, but I doubt they'll complain about people other than little girls buying, say, the DVDs (And there's a small, but nonetheless extant number of bronies who buy the toys, too. Granted, I only bought Rarity for my niece <_< And why does she have a silly bird instead of Opalescence as her pet? :/).
• Hasbro went and hired a not-exactly-cheap, just-past-emergence high-profile animation team, which I strongly suspect to have been more expensive than a run-of-the-mill-shit-out-something-as-commercial team. I think it isn't too far-fetched to assume that Hasbro didn't just want a show to advertise its ponies, but a good show to do this. Why else spend the extra money?
• Frankly, the executive meddling we know of was a good thing, IMHO. As far as I'm aware, Ms. Faust was aiming to make the show go in a magical girl with ponies direction - basically, the pilot episodes. Hasbro said 'Nyet, slice of life please. The world as you designed it allows for enough action without constant Sailor Moon or Magic Knight Rayearth references.' And Hasbro was right. I can also understand its desire to not have one giant plot arc: One has to consider the key demographic. I gave up on series with an overarching plot at that age, since it simply wasn't possible to catch the episodes in the correct order. Now, the internet solves this problem to a substantial extend, (Thanks to youtube and torrents), and an overarching plot - as occured to some extend - is more doable than in the past, but still. There are some things were Hasbro's meddling was somewhat strange (Minor aspects of the design, Princess Celestia and such), but... Well, they're minor. By and large, I consider Hasbro's activities to have been beneficial.

Haven't seen this; but heck, it could make for a good crossover with a Seth Macfarlane creation (Family Guy, Cleveland Show, American Dad) for a drug-induced haze episode. Over here in the UK, I wonder if the BBC would buy the rights to it?

Although how they'd animate the characters from those shows to fit into the My Little Pony style, is debatable...

Because of that, Hasbro has to do things like give Rarity a bird or make Celestia pink, and the smaller retailers have to take the same "girly" toys or, basically, go out of business.
