Yeah, it probably is. I'd prefer it to show nothing for religion in my case though. I wonder what's shown for nations that have received the religion issue and chose the options for no official religion.

I think the economy section may be slightly broken? My average income has become only $27.6k, and I have a black market of $512 trillion, over three times my GDP??
EDIT: Also I'm not sure why my consumption is literally close to nothing compared to output

Oh also, there seems to be a bit of a problem with historical political compass ideologies, particularly left-wing ones at that? I was just looking through one of my other nations when I saw this (taken straight from the website):
"Closest of the 63 named ideologies: Communism (Authoritarian Left). Totalising state socialism organised by a vanguard party. The entity is positioned in the Authoritarian Left zone (X -79, Y -55), which corresponds to a state-run economy under concentrated power. The economic axis is derived from the Economic Freedom census, which scores 68/100. The authority axis is derived from Civil Rights (22) and Political Freedom (6), whose mean is 14, adjusted for Government Size (21/100, a libertarian shift of about 17 points). Together they describe an economy that is laissez-faire and a civil-liberties regime that is restrictive, the defining combination of Communism."

A communist, laissez-faire economy?

I'm still looking into yor black market qestion but I can alr respond for the consumption.

It is explained in how the data is calculated, the consumption is the private spending after tax, you have 96% of tax and 0 private sector so yea.

Consumption = Output × (1 − TaxRate)

Black market is doing the heavy lift, I count black market as private sector, most of your economy is maintained by the black market that's why you are considered a tad bit right

This is the formula: Tax Evasion and/or Illegal Black Market = Output × 3 × TaxRate × (1 / GovEfficiency), you're low gow efficiency and extremely high taxation is (theoritically) forcing people to evade taxes and contribute to the black market.

If you have other doubts it should all be explained in "how the data is calculated"

I really like this site. But like political ideology quizzes, this site suffers from the ideological compatibility grid thing. I got democratic socialism, despite having a political freedom score of 23.3 and being an autocracy. If I may quote from a tier list I made about this very phenomenon: "Let me start off by explaining what a lot of tests get wrong. Many will try to assign you an ideology based on your apparent compatibility with it. The problem is that ideology isn't just an estimation about how left and right they are. They are clusters of premises. There are forms of analysis. They are disciplines. Even Votely, which is probably my favorite political alignment quiz, makes this mistake (that's why I say the 2d chart is a complete skip). It plots Georgism as leaning libertarian and leaning economically right. But why? Fundamentally speaking, Georgism is the belief that land shouldn't be something you own. It should be something you rent from society. If you wish to make money off of this land, you must pay rent. You can lower the rent by improving the land's value. That's it. It's compatible with fascism, communism, and even libertarianism. You can get yourself to the "georgist section" by merely being a moderate liberal. You don't have to accept the aforementioned premises."

I can go more into detail about how this criticism applies to your site if you'd like, but I'll just say that I believe the same goes here. An autocracy can land in in the democratic socialism quadrant despite the explicitly undemocratic characteristics of their nation. As a result of that, I think this part should be scrapped because I genuinely don't think it can be done well. Any accuracy is likely just due to luck.

I'm aware of this problem that's why I also try to explain why some labels are incorrect exc.
I'm still updating the way the political compass calculates ideologies everyday, I don't think it will ever be perfect and I totally don't think it is nearly as good as I want it to be at the moment but something is better than nothing.
There's only one part where I disagree with you, ideologies are complex and not all of them can be displayed in the 2d compass that's true, but I'd say that at least a good 60%/70% of them can be calculated and shown via the 2d compass maybe that 40%/30% can be considered "luck" but not the other 60%/70%.
I hope you get what I mean.
Anyway thanks for sharing your opinion :)

If you'd like to we can discuss this further via Telegram so your thread isn't solely about this issue. If possible, I'd like to provide continuous and sustained feedback for as long as the site is in development and I see such feedback as necessary. But for now, I would counter that:

1. a 60-70% legitimate (read as not luck-based) success rate is only marginally better than random chance, and by conceding that, you are admitting the point I was making: that plotting ideologies on a 2d chart is a nightmare.

2. I contend that the issue with graphing ideologies on a 2d or 3d chart is more than just their complexity. I would argue that even a simple ideology can't be graphed on such a chart. Again, "The problem is that ideology isn't just an estimation about how left and right they are. They are clusters of premises. There are forms of analysis. They are disciplines." Even if such a quiz or ideology compatibility tool existed that could account for this fact, NationStates doesn't provide the necessary information for such tools to work.

3. I am in the middle of writing a series that aims to define fascism. In that series, here's the list of definitions I address (and keep in mind, it's not even exaustive):

Robert Paxton‡
"...a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion."

Roger Griffin
"...a revolutionary form of nationalism, one that sets out to be a political, social and ethical revolution, welding the "people" into a dynamic national community under new elites infused with heroic values. The core myth that inspires this project is that only a populist, trans-class movement of purifying, cathartic national rebirth (palingenesis) can stem the tide of decadence."

Lawrence Britt ‡†
"...powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism, disdain for the importance of human rights, identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause, the supremacy of the military/avid militarism, rampant sexism, a controlled mass media, obsession with national security, religion and ruling elite tied together, power of corporations protected, power of labor suppressed or eliminated, disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts, obsession with crime and punishment, rampant cronyism and corruption, and fraudulent elections."

Umberto Eco‡‡
“Cult of tradition, Rejection of modernism, Cult of action for action’s sake, Disagreement is treason, Fear of difference, Appeal to frustrated middle class, Obsession with a plot, Enemies are too strong and too weak, Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy, Contempt for the weak, Everybody is educated to become a hero, Machismo, Selective populism, and Newspeak.”

Webster Dictionary
a populist political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual, that is associated with a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, and that is characterized by severe economic and social regimentation and by forcible suppression of opposition

Oxford Dictionary
An authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization [...] Fascism tends to include a belief in the supremacy of one national or ethnic group, a contempt for democracy, an insistence on obedience to a powerful leader, and a strong demagogic approach.

Knights of Lusitania
"Fascism is the understanding that in order to Feed your nation, you must first Seed the soil."

The Doctrine of Fascism
“Fascism is a religious conception in which man is seen in his immanent relation to a higher law, a spirit that transcends the individual and elevates him to conscious membership of a spiritual society.”

[6 separate quotes that lead to my following summary of how fascists define the organic state]
When you combine all of this together, the following becomes very clear: Fascism isn’t concerned with defining fascism. Its primary ideological goal is the development of fascist mythology. This mythology, if reified, would manifest as a state that personifies the masses. Such a state would allegedly be uniquely capable of instilling purpose, decency, and prosperity. All it requires is the acceleration of imperialism and the suppression of all sources of diversity disunity. This mythology can thus be understood as the following pretenses:

Fascist Pretense 1.) The state is the largest and most valid level of political organization. It serves as the unifier and personification of the in-group.

Fascist Pretense 2.) Certain groups are incompatible with each other. Entertaining equality or peace between them will lead to perpetual decline.

Fascist Pretense 3.) The state's primary directive is to perpetuate the in-group by asserting its supremacy. It does so via internal suppression and external expansion.

Communist International (1935)
"[fascism is] the open terrorist dictatorship of the most reactionary, most chauvinistic and most imperialist elements of finance capital."

Aimé Césaire
"Geographically speaking, on its own soil fascism is imperialist repression turned inward."

Michael Parenti
"[fascism] is an instrument for preserving capitalism by destroying democracy and launching imperialist war."

me
Fascism is a defense of capitalism facing crisis -- one that accelerates imperialism. It forgoes socio-economic critique in favor of socio-demographic critique. It demands that the state -- the personification of the masses -- manifest purpose, decency, and prosperity by suppressing all sources of disunity -- notably class consciousness and cultural friction. This mythology can thus be understood as the following pretenses:

Fascist Pretense 1.) The state is the largest and most valid level of political organization. It serves as the unifier and personification of the in-group. You are not a proletariat/woman/indigenous person/etc. of the world. You are a proletariat/woman/indigenous person/etc. of the state and are thus subject to the state's individual mythology regarding resistance to class oppression/sexual inequality/indigenous servitude/any struggle the state actively perpetuates: it's over.

Fascist Pretense 2.) Certain groups are incompatible with each other. Entertaining equality or peace between them will lead to perpetual decline. This scapegoating is justified by forgoing analysis of tangible class contradictions for a mythology of irreconcilable races and/or cultures. This serves the purpose of redirecting ire and revolutionary energy rightfully aimed at the bourgeoisie to the subjugation of one's neighbors.

Fascist Pretense 3.) The state's primary directive is to perpetuate the in-group by asserting its supremacy. It does so by accelerating imperialism which serves to acquire resources/labor for in-group bourgeois profits and the occasional bribery towards the in-group proletariat (no different from when liberal governments do it). It also heightens suppression which serves to subsidize compliant in-group corporations that supply large surveillance and law enforcement apparatuses. This stimulates the economy and creates a caste of humans whose oppression can be credited for the economic "miracle").

And that's before getting into definitions of proto-fascism and crypto-fascism, which complicate things further. So my question is very simple: how would you plot fascism on a 2d or even 3d chart given the true definition of it is still in contention? Ideosorter is a site that aims to avoid this issue by assigning you an ideology based on the premises you accept, and it still doesn't do this perfectly. And if you concede that doing so is a daunting task, how do you think this difficulty scales when you consider the full number of ideologies? What about ideologies that would be very close to each other on the chart (or to rephrase the question: when is a difference too meaningless or small to express on the chart)? What about ideologies that would fit nicely into your chart, but are too niche? Untangling this mess is very difficult, and again NationStates does not provide you the tools to cut this knot.
----------
There are ways to make it more accurate, but it would require some substantial backtracking first and would require the results to be more generic. At that point, I think it's best to cut your losses. In its place, you can perhaps you can gather data about the types of NS classifications and how much a specific nation differentiates itself from others of the same classification. For example, an Iron-Fist Socialist is usually pretty secular. If a specific Iron-Fist Socialist is 10% more religious than the average Iron-Fist Socialist, that would be good data to put there.

Does your site set a user agent when interacting with the NationStates API? Looking through your JS script (not much point in obfuscating it, but you do you) and the Network tab, this does not seem to be the case (User-Agent header is the default browser one, and there's no URL parameter identifying your script).

Since some browsers override the User-Agent header set by scripts in APIs like fetch(), I usually pass it in as a ?script={userAgent} URL parameter when in browser scripts. Example: https://github.com/Merethin/userscripts ... ser.js#L15

The API documentation does not specify what to do when you cannot override the user agent, but this is what's recommended in the HTML script rules when in the same situation, specifically under the section "Identifying your Tool": viewtopic.php?p=16394966#p16394966. I've also seen other people do things like "?userAgent={userAgent}"

The WA was called the UN, but the real UN got mad

This is hilarious

I recently developed a website some of you might find interesting called NationStates Dossier Explorer (NSDE):
https://nationstates-dossier-explorer.vercel.app/

Most of the statistics shown are taken directly from NationStates and showed in a more visually appealing way. (at least in my opinion)

With this data I can estimate the ideology of your nation.
I've added 63 ideologies but if you think I should add some more let me know. (I'm not a politics expert so please let me know if I wrongly described an ideology)

There's also an Economy Report which is basically data calculated with NSeconomy model.

Visit the site and let me know what you think about it!

(Suggestions and bug reports are appreciated  )

Congratulations, I love it.

Merethin wrote:Does your site set a user agent when interacting with the NationStates API?

Thanks for taking a close look :) , for the client stuff like the dossier lookups they go straight from the browser. Since User-Agent is a forbidden header in fetch(), a static page can't override it, so those requests just carry the user's default browser UA.
the server side was already good: all the automated traffic (like the example nation scans and data dumps i cite in "how the data is calculated") runs through serverless functions where it explicitly set the User-Agent (NS-Dossier-Explorer/...).

I just added the script parameter to all client calls following the script you linked. (Big thank you)

I'm a very paranoic person, I obfuscated the code so people can't copy it yet (I know they technically can but something is better than nothing) and blame me if it doesn't work, I'll make the repo public once I'm done with the site and everything works as intended.
Thank you again

1. I never said your point was wrong, you clearly have more knowledge than me on the topic I only said that calling it entirely luck was wrong since I take into account at least some stats.
2. Indeed
3. This is interesting wow, I'm italian and I didn't even know there were this many definitions (I only knew the Umberto Eco one tbh)
4. The definition I cite on my site is this one: "Everything within the state: aggressive nationalism, corporatism, leader cult." it isn't nearly a definition but I only need to give the user an idea of what their nation was classified as.
5.
"And if you concede that doing so is a daunting task, how do you think this difficulty scales when you consider the full number of ideologies?"
I'm pretty sure it either is impossible or extremely difficult (more lenient towards impossible), you would need an extreme amount of different stats, I'm trying to take into account as many NS stats as possible btw it is not finished (I won't use them all tho).
6.
"(or to rephrase the question: when is a difference too meaningless or small to express on the chart)?" Probably when I don't have any NS stats to differentiate them but even so I don't think I will ever put more than 75/80 ideologies (im at 63 rn and I'm still not sure if I want to add any more)
7.
"What about ideologies that would fit nicely into your chart, but are too niche?"
Do you have any or is this a rhetorical question? As long as they differintiate a bit from the others in terms of NS statistics I could add some of them.
8.
" In its place, you can perhaps you can gather data about the types of NS classifications and how much a specific nation differentiates itself from others of the same classification. For example, an Iron-Fist Socialist is usually pretty secular. If a specific Iron-Fist Socialist is 10% more religious than the average Iron-Fist Socialist, that would be good data to put there."

Ok the problem with this might be that NS doesn't keep track of past WA classifications but I will look into it tomorrow because this seems actually good.

9.
"If you'd like to we can discuss this further via Telegram so your thread isn't solely about this issue. If possible, I'd like to provide continuous and sustained feedback for as long as the site is in development and I see such feedback as necessary."

I'll consider the website done when it will be bugless and the 2d compass will take into account a good amount of NS stats (world census report) if you have any suggestion on how to change:
-Ideologies name
-Ideologies short descriptions
-The stats considered to determine certain ideologies
-Or even add some ideologies
Then yes please telegram me you clearly know better than me.
Unfortunately I probably won't change the core structure of how the compass works, (even tho it will never be not even nearly perfect as you pointed out) mainly because I don't have the knowledge, the time and the will to do it and also because I want the site to remain simple to understand and use.
If you have other questions post here or telegram me! :)
