An American novel one of my friends recommended to me. It is called "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" by Ron Hansen.

John D MacDonald - The Crossroads Arguably the best of his many excellent novels
CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision.

I am reading Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark, a curious and delectably dark horror fantasy novella set firmly in the heyday of one of the American South’s most notorious terrorist groups, the Ku Klux Klan. A sense of humour, even whimsy, weaves its way through the darkness of hatred and trauma. I am almost finished with it and the pacing has been excellent so far, starting at a nice clip and slowly escalating all the while. If it can sick the landing, I will be quite pleased.
