Been on a bit of a hunt for good atmospheric BM albums of late and come up with a few good finds that I'd thought I'd share... all the links are to the full album on youtube.

Grima - Tales of the Enchanted Woods
Massenhinrichtung - The Last Bird of Hope
Ledas - My Spirit Around Me Night And Day

That Grima album is quite nice. Definitely getting some Agalloch and Empyrium tingles from it. A little rough-around-the-edges in comparison to those bands, but I think that actually adds to their charm.

On a related note, the new Rhapsody of Fire album was actually pretty awesome. A couple tasty epics, a couple ridiculously catchy choruses about wizards and swords, a couple speedy neoclassical shredfests.... basically everything a fan of classic Rhapsody could want.

Oh man, the first two Agalloch albums are essential. Think Grima, but another notch up in quality. And more nature I'd listen to "Dead Winter Days" and "You Were But A Ghost In My Arms" to get your feet wet. Once you're acclimated, take on the 15-minute "In The Shadow of Our Pale Companion", which slowly builds up the atmosphere before a breathtaking payoff.

I'm not AS big of a fan of the next few Agalloch albums, but they never made anything bad. They have some great EPs that are more of a neofolk style too.

That's one reason why threads like this are great, you might end up checking out stuff you'd never see otherwise. I've found some great stuff from completely unexpected places.

But that's not why I came here, I came here to say that this is Bathory's best thrash metal (non-black or viking metal) song. And because this it the internet I'll throw a disclaimer: before anyone gets pea into their frontal cortex, liking a plane/ship/gun of a certain country doesn't mean shit politically.

Definitely not bad, but I’d rather just listen to the new Rhapsody of Fire. Grabs me more. March of the Tyrant, man.

Dare I say it, I might even prefer their new vocalist’s voice to Fabio’s. Even though there’s no debating their most inspired work was made with Fabio.

Their third best. Shows what happens when playing it safe works out well. Deutschland is the best song but there isn't a bad one at all. Liebe ist Fur Alle Da was taking a risk and it worked out well even if Pussy did almost kill the bad. Thankfully Lindemann's solo album got that out of the band's system.

Quick listen to a few songs on youtube suggests that the Agalloch album I should start with is Marrow of the Spirit as it's the one that most immediately grabbed me while playing in the background, that their first album isn't really my bag, but that all the others are going to be at least 3.5s or 4s out of 5.

So that's immediately on first listen right up there with my favourite bands in terms of the number of quality albums. No big or anything

I like Marrow of the Spirit, especially the powerful "To Drown", but that album gets a little too far into droney post-rock territory for long stretches for me to fully enjoy the whole thing. But it's still probably my third-favorite after Pale Folklore and The Mantle because there are some great moments.

If The Mantle isn't at least a 4, I don't think we can be friends
