So I know every Imperial Guard regiment is supposed to be based off a historical, real-world military, and in most cases it's fairly obvious what they're based off of. The one regiment I can't figure out though is the Cadian Shock Troopers. What are they supposed to be based off of, exactly? Nothing really springs to mind when I see them except maybe the Marines from Halo or the soldiers from Starship Troopers.

TBH, I don't see this for the Cadians...truth be told they're probably more like Sparta.
You're right, they are kind of like Spartans because there's always demons invading their homeasteroid fieldplanet, so they have to have a society that's based almost entirely on war.

I recall them becoming more and more OP as the expansions progressed, people started calling it Dawn of Eldar.
In Battlefleet Gothic Armada though? Eldar are horrible to play as. AI can do it OK when they aren't being stupid because they can control each individual ship simultaneously with split second timing (which is why if I'm up against Eldar one one of those awful data recovery missions I just quit, it isn't worth it). Most of my attempts ended with my ships getting easily blown up because I was busy keeping my other ships moving and thus alive. Shields that only work while you're moving + guns on the front that make your ships automatically stop if you target an enemy with them are not a good combination.
I remember one game, I was so close to winning with 2 battleships left to the enemy's 1 cruiser. then they crippled the front one's engines with a lucky shot just as I activated the boost on both, so the rear one rammed the front one and both exploded instantly.

Yeah, they were always more just "annoying" rather than actually challenging, and my playstyle (gradual expanding map control with a focus on defence and firepower) makes them pretty damn easy, as it gives them nowhere to hide.
