[Q] Where to ask a gameplay-related question

Postby West Bromwich Holme » Fri Aug 05, 2022 5:07 am

I'm creating a fictional city for an NS-related RP, but want its Chinese name to sound accurate enough and realistic, which forum would be best to ask for this sort of thing?

The nation's it's own standalone thing, not based on real-world nations etc.

Not sure where's best to ask about pinyin and other things on here, especially as I don't speak Chinese.
Pronouns: She/her, formerly he/him as of August 2022.
Formerly Astholm. I am no longer using the account.
Rebooted continuity ; March 2016
This nation is no longer in use; have switched account. All posts are left for historical purposes on here.

That is definitely not a "gameplay-related question" - it's a roleplay one. There's not a particular forum for that kind of question, and you may be better off using Google to get your answer. The only forum it might somewhat fit in is F&NI.

At one point Gameplay did have a 'Chinese Motto Clinic' thread wherein you might have been able to get a suitable name for the city sorted out, but unfortunately that's now been inactive since 20212. :(
The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

I would be cautious about using online translators. Asian languages are notoriously difficult to translate into English and back, and we've had users in the past get into trouble for accidentally being obscene while trying to translate things about their nations into Chinese, Japanese, etc.

Building up on what my colleague said, Mandarin is known for its use of homophones as a means of dodging online censorship. As an example, the phrase "Grass Mud Horse," made famous in a 2009 Chinese meme that lists ten animals whose names sound like inappropriate Mandarin phrases, is a play on a phrase that literally translates to "fuck your mother."
