[R] Coronavirus Misinformation

Postby Salandriagado » Wed Apr 29, 2020 6:52 am

Some scientists are warning this disease could become endemic which would mean all current measures and social distancing is utterly pointless

Clearly false information, with a clear dangerous effect:

So am I better off killing myself in this case, since the countermeasures in place now won't save me? Asking for a friend.

ModEdit: [R] added to thread title to clarify that this is a report thread; please take general third party discussion of what constitutes misinformation to the existing coronavirus rules discussion thread in this forum.

I’m sorry how is that misinformation? I was in no way trying to imply what the other poster said.

This post also looks a tad suspicious especially since the poster has been told otherwise many a time

I'm not seeing it in either case. The first post in no way implies what Torisakia said in their post, and the second argument is one that's being played out across nations worldwide at the moment.

The first contains a clearly false claim - that a disease becoming endemic makes efforts to slow its initial spread pointless.

I'm not seeing the post as dangerous. For a start, San Lumen's post is saying if it becomes endemic (not that it is), and he's arguing that if that is the case, then there should be a change in policy. There's no "get out on the streets now, it'll make no difference".

I would like to point out that the OP of this thread was specifically told to put san lumen on their ignore list and quite obviously ignored a direction from moderation

Putting people on your ignore list does not stop you seeing their posts when others quote them, or indeed at all.

That isn't false info. That's an opinion.

No it isn't. It is a factual claim, and a false one - even if it was inevitable that the disease would become endemic, it would still be the case that slowing it would reduce the death toll by orders of magnitude.

Almost certainly, but not entirely certainly.

How many people die if a disease becomes endemic is far from predictable. Plague is endemic to the US, but few people die from it, because both it has a small, geographically isolated reservoir population and because we have good treatments for it. Also, many diseases mutate to become less virulent over time. And, of course, we may develop vaccines, treatments, or cures for any disease, and COVID in specific. But none of those things must happen.

So, the most scientifically correct form of the statement is:

San Lumen wrote:https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-28/virus-is-here-to-stay-and-likely-seasonal-say-china-scientists

Some scientists are warning this disease could become endemic which would mean all current measures and social distancing is may be utterly pointless

But since I'm a little hazy on how Moderation is interpreting the Word of Max, I'm not sure if this breaks the rules.

This is turning into a general discussion of what constitutes misinformation; but it's a report thread, not a discussion thread. We already have a discussion thread here in Moderation for discussion of the temporary coronavirus rules.

Because Salandriagado - no doubt inadvertently - didn't put a [report] or [R] in the thread title, I'm going to assume this was a good faith error, and won't hand out warnings for spamming a moderation report thread with opinion posts.

I'll now go an edit an '[R]' into the thread title, but would be grateful if we could take the general discussion over to the appropriate thread; thank you.

Otherwise, posts in this thread should be restricted to the report of potential actionable behaviour (and directly related reports), material evidence directly relating to the report, and posts by the subject of the report - as per standard Moderation Forum guidelines.

Ooops, sorry about that failure of title-writing.
