[q]Editing a Mega Thread OP.

Postby Tarsonis » Mon Sep 09, 2019 7:29 pm

Context: So, I’ve been the Op in the last 3 iterations of the CDT. We’ve been having some issues with bad faith posting (not intending to engage in honest and open discussion, but rather introducing tangential discussions to try to “own the Christians.” Not a huge problem, but with enough frequency that it’s getting tiresome. So I wanted to update the OP with some langue to politely point out that the tread is not there for Internet Quixote’s to slay the Christians in their layer, but for good faith discussion.

So the questions are

1. Can I make that change? While I’m the current OP I didn’t start the thread, nor do I have thread ownership as it’s a discussion thread. Would altering the OP and thus the dynamic of the thread (somewhat) be permissible for a megathread?

2. Is such a caveat even enforceable? Again I know I don’t get to control the conversation per se, and the difference between good and bad faith posting can be pretty ambiguous, but would this be something that the moderation team could enforce (if necessary) or something we just have to deal with as one of the joys of NSG?

I see no problem with reminding people that Christian-bashing is frowned on, in fact, I think you should. Once done, your best bet is to report bad faith posters to us and let us deal with it. You'll need to be careful to avoid the appearance of using Mods a weapons, though.

That’s generally how it’s done now, though usually if directly challenged said offenders tend try and hide behind the catch all nature of the thread. My goal here would hopefully be to head that off at the pass so to speak, and make clear that while all good faith avenues of discussion are allowed and encouraged, its not a battlefield for non-Christians to try and take us down so to speak.

Like I said, you can put a warning in the OP, but who reads OPs? No one listens to that sort of thing when one of us OPs a megathread.

Thanks. It’s just useful to point to if it does crop up. Avoids the whole “doesn’t say I can’t anywhere” issue.

Absolutely. Have at it.

So, as the OP of the Trans Discussion Thread, I had a similar issue with hit and run posters, and the predictable attack helicopter copypasta. Which is why for the current iteration of the thread, I decided to pre-empt that with the image seen in the OP.

I've noticed (and I'm sure Moderation data would confirm) a significant drop off in the number of "troll posting attack helicopter meme in Trans Thread" instances this time around. I can't say it'll work for you, but based on my experiences, it might.

I'm not sure what the Christian discussion equivalent is, though. And I don't recall a huge number of attack helicopter reports. You're always going to get hit and run posters, the lulz are just too good to pass up.

That is a fair point, but I'm sure the CDT regulars could come up with a few.

And I don't recall a huge number of attack helicopter reports.

Sure, but I can recall several instances of its usage (and of moderation responses to those usages) over all the previous threads, while there is a comparative lack with the current iteration.

I'll admit, we've had a fair number of them this go around, but it feels significantly diminished compared to the previous ones as well.

It'll all go away when we merge everything into one giant, swollen megathread, don't worry.
